Is there a place on the map I need to get to (like a taxi company) in order to do taxi jobs?
Early on, good money makers are pizza delivery (do it on time), and semi-trailer hauls. Renting sucks, so once you have enough get a taxi or a tow truck, depending on your preference. Put $$ into a car at a parts shop and you'd be surprised at the difference it can make.
Online is also a good place to start, there's a few active servers. The most active server will have people that will come to you if you need help so try there as well!
Races are a "hobby", they only give you racing XP.
To make money you need to do the other jobs: trucking (transporting goods), taxi, ambulance, police jobs, bus, wrecker (towing and/or rescuing vehicles).
For this you will start with the vehicles the game lends you, they have a blue symbol over them and they appear in the mini map as xxxx job (for example truck job); but these vehicles, as you are not the owner, will get a cut of watever money you make in them (the owner will pay for the fuel, when refueling), you can see this in the TAB menu while inside the vehicle, on the "company" section; better vehicles will take a bigger cut from your profits (for example the bigger trucks will go up to 50% or more), so ideally you want to buy your own vehicles, so you get the full profit from any job.
So, to start, you first need to see which job you like best, and buy your own vehicle to do that job in; then just use it to get more money for more vehicles and better ones to get more profit.
The best (and cheapest) two starting options are, either a Trophy Taxi at 15000, because its the cheapest taxi, and the taxi license can be taken out of it and put on a better car (the license by itself aslready costs 10000); or you buy the Dory pickup for 10000 and start doing deliveries (better if you use a trailer for more cargo space).
The absolute cheapest option to start earning money with you own vehicle, is to buy a scooter or Gunthoo for 6000, and plop a pizza box on it, to do fast food deliveries.
The best early money maker, is to use any of your vehicles with a trailer hitch (2000 to add one to any vehicle) and buying a SPT1 trailer for 8000 (sold at heavy duty vehicle dealership), to deliver new cars from the harbour, with the no damage bonus you can get as much 11000 per trip.
done when the racing level is high enough. Truck jobs depend
on the driver level.
Drive safe and take care.
