You need to own a bus and select the preferred vehicle for the NPC driver. You'll also want to make sure to select a route for the NPC to drive by clicking on the three dots next to the driver (this you may want to gauge based on the size of your available vehicle)

ive done all of the above and never even seen a hired npc start moving the vehicle even after the option to hand it over pops up

Put the bus in the tuning shop > etc. > bus license. Its costs 20k and after that get out and will prompt you again. The bus will also earn 10% of what you would normally earn. Also the most profitable route, I think, is the route that circles around the starting town. Just choose the one with the most people in that route within that town. Also you need to repair the bus, it only costs 100, I use the profit report as a reminder to repair the bus.

Let me tell you a story I took 70K loan (which was the maximum). bought the the cheapest bus. I then upgraded the starting car. now I had 2k left with repayments of 1856. only to find out I need the license and now I cant afford the license for the bus. Had to do taxi jobs for a little while to reach 20k to buy that license. I asked the npc to drive it around and his first profit was 185 ToT. Don't be like me...

If you bought your bus from the Bus dealership it should have the license installed by default, maybe its different if your buying from a different location?

I bought the Van which is the cheapest "bus", which isn't a bus hence you need to buy it first XD.

yup i didint buy the bus at the dealership and was having some other weird problem with the AI driver but went and got the license and its now working. the actual buses seem to come with a license regardless of where theyre bought. i dont think the license system was explained anywhere in the intro missions
I'm having similar issues.. I put a taxi license on my starter car and I got the cheapest tow truck, they're both just sitting idle after I try to hand them over to npcs..

or can companies only do bus & trucking stuff? I did try to assign my dabo to the company, but it had the same issue of nothing happening when I handed it over to npcs..

Did you set up your Dabo with a truck route before handing it over?

You'll need to create a route for the truck, unlike buses there are no predefined routes for the trucks, on the same screen where you can add vehicles there is a tab that says truck route, hit the little plus sign and pick some spots for your truck to go, pay attention to what the demand and supply of each spot is and you should be able to figure out a route from there.

Maybe some kind soul here can write up some better directions or point you to a guide that covers it better. I'm at work on my phone sorry.
This game is a broken mess and the feature you are trying to use doesn't work. You have to assign the vehicle to NPC and then manually exit the vehicle, it will ask you to hand over to NPC and then you can and it will work.

The only things you can automate are produce deliveries, some tanker deliveries, bus routes (maybe coal, fuel, logging?, not sure). You can't automate towing/wrecker, garbage, police, or taxi.
