I think we woulden't know if they are gone and leave the game kaputt. But it is still in EA so anything can happen. I guess lets hope not and they just continue with the development and finish the game and keep on polish after the game is done.
It will take them about 2 years to finish so they say. We can only hope the devs won't let it ride into the open bleu sky and let it go kaputt.

As far as I know you can play this game offline..

Your game progression is saved in the steam cloud. This means, that you
cannot play the game offline (disconnected from the internet or steam).
You don't need a "server" to play the game. Joining a server is only an
option to play the game with some more "custom server settings" and
together with more players at the same time because of the higher
power of servers that run a game instance and their higher availability.

Instead of joining or hosting a server you can play with other players
by open your game session for them (they get kicked when you stop
the running game) or by joining the game session of other players as
long as they run the game and allow other players to join.

The main concept of the game is playing it solo (singleplayer) and
playing together with other players (multiplayer) is just an option.

P.S.: The english word for "kaputt" is "broken".
