grinding ingame currency to unlock more mechs takes quite long though as there is a weekly goldgain cap of 4000 and a new mech costs 20000 (all cost the same) and pilots take even longer to unlock without money.... not to mention leveling their skills up
(pilots have unique passives like 3-5.5% more attackpower to enemies further than 150m away or getting a small hp shield for a duration after a kill and such stuff)
for serious competition where every small % counts i would say it's either pay of grind for a long time to get the best values though atleast to me the value increases you can gain are so small that it doesn't rly matter for my skillevel.
In short, there are only two non-cosmetics things to unlock with real money: Pilots and Mecha.
Pilots are meh-ish. You only have to find one that suits your preferences. They can be unlocked with a certain amount of pilot gifts; these are quite affordable for a f2p player, but sadly capped at 5 choice and 20 random ones per week (you need 30 of a kind for a pilot) so this is more of a time gate to skip than anything.
Mechas, at the other hand... you start with 5 of them unlocked, on the beginner quests give enough currency to buy a 6th of your choosing. (Don't waste the gold on skins!)
Besides that, you're capped at 4k gold from matches a week + rewards, meaning you have to wait ~4 weeks when buying mechas with currency.
However, there are two other ways to obtain mechas: mecha shards and trial cards. The former are usually handed out during event and can be traded in for mechas, whereas the latter unlock a mech only for a limited time (usually a week). You obtain both quite often from challenges or events.
It's quite easy to build an arsenal of stuff you like. But if you are a perfectionist... you're still better off grinding, because buying every mecha and pilot with crystals is past the 100 € treshhold, lol.
I'd say this game is P2S - pay to skin :))))))
Or pay for those skin where you maybe could strike some fear effect into enemies :)
