Your Steam Client offers a controller interface, it can cause problems if you are using another driver/app/emulator for your device.
There is a switch to turn these settings on/off for each game. Right click on the game in steam library and choose properties. "Steam Input Per-Game Setting" ; “Use your Global Steam Input" for on, "Force Off" to disable. Select Force Off.
Some have reported this setting can change on its own when Steam client updates.
For your specific question, the "Y" key will act as the Y button, by default.
I had to remove any input for the brake pedal. So I can race but I have NO brakes
