The older games get super cheap when on sale.
If you like the gameplay you'll want to play all of them anyway.
If you plan to buy them all eventually - go with the order of release.
Why? A little bit for the story (purchase order isn't really that important for this), but primarily for the change in latter titles regarding how hero level ups are handled. The first game relies on heroes starting at lvl 1 and leveling up ONLY during the time you play a particular stage, whereas in the older titles, your heroes' level ups persist and you get to the point when you have all of them at lvl 10.
And so I recommend you start with the first one, because going backwards to that hero level up system can seem a little weird.
Either way, all of the Kingdom Rush games are worth it.
1. Kingdom Rush --> Heroes lvl is always set to 1 for the beginning of every stage and level up from there
2. Kingdom Rush Frontiers --> Heroes now lvl up as some kind of perma-progression
3. Kingdom Rush Origins --> every Hero now offers a unique third active ability
4. Kingdom Rush Vengeance --> every tower type is different (and not only on Tier 4) and there are lots of different towers but you have to choose 5 Towers to bring to every stage
My personal ranking is:
Origins > Frontiers > Vanilla > Vengeance
(but keep in mind these are the 4 best tower defense games I personally know and I just didn't enjoy having only 5 different towers per stage in Vengeance that much. If you could pick 8 Towers - or even better: all of them - it would have been my #1)
