Blazing Gem is insane too, but it has to be placed correctly or it's wasted.
Swamp Thing is great but situational, not good for every level.
I think Asra, the second hero you get is really good for sure. Doom Tank is really powerful and I hear the Ice Dragon is actually the strongest in the game but I haven't unlocked him yet.
I have 4 really liked towers:Melting Furnace,Orc Shaman,Goblin rocket riders and Deep Devil's reef.
Melting Furnace has huge aoe damage which i like really much.Orc Shaman is just cool, but his damage is really good as well.Goblin rocket riders are fun and they have really solid damage.Probably mine favorite is Deep Devil's reef because it's a barrack and mage in the same time which is really effective, you have two decent warriors and really good damage on mage side
so you can stack up two towers and have 2 mage tower damage and 4 warriors etc.
Occasionally I swap in the Melting Furnace if I feel the need for more aoe control but that has only happened in the post campaign Impossible levels. Other towers I like are the Rotten Forest and the Grim Cemetery but I seldom use them. I have not really tried the Swamp Thing and the Goblin War Zeppelin much, still have to take the time to test them out properly. I pretty much agree with everything said by Rainbow Droid and dK.
As for heroes, well, Eiskalt allows me to lead the lazy life because his ult is amazing and he's very aggressive so I generally roll with him but there are many others I enjoyed. Veruk, Mortemis, Doom Tank and Jack all have, beyond good skills, extra minions with them, which is always cool and useful. Asra teleports around and can poison/kill single targets very efficiently. Tramin is pretty fun to play. Beresad's ult is great to clear the whole screen of smaller enemies. Murglun is very good if you favour a more traditional, defender oriented playstyle (to clump enemies together for her ult) AND she can boost towers on top of that (which also favours a more defensive play). Jun'pai's Banner of Courage is also great if you like playing defensive. Jigou and Oloch I didn't like very much and Margosa... well, she's pretty good for single target damage and sustainability but Asra does what she does better and has a better ult? Poor Margosa T_T
dark elves are also really good, they suck at melee but at range though. stack a bunch of first level elves on top of eachother, it's glorious.
i like witches, because they can either do magic damage plus occasional stuns, or true damage through their poison.
my setup is often either: shadow archer/dark knights/swamp thing/furnace/wicked sisters
or: shadow archer/dark elves/swamp thing/furnace/wicked sisters
the other towers are also pretty good, i find the bone throwers pretty good and all but they don't feel effective until level 4, shadow archers feel good from level 2 and onwards. the upgrades of the shadow archer, with exception to the first level of crow, are pretty weak though.
as for heroes, i like doomtank, beresad, asra, mortemis (underrated ngl) and eiskalt. the others aren't bad perse but i prefer these five.
1) Specter Mausoleum - absolutly universal. Gargoiles are good stoppers and possession is extremly powerful for it's minimal cost. Seeing 2 High Sorcerors turning each other into sheep is top kek moment, only to see how 3rd Sorceror turn your sheep into sheep.
2) Bone Flingers - Reverse Tower, spamming skellies is really nice feature, also super cheap.
3) Harrassers - Probably strongest barracks in whole serie. These guy can solo most of enemies, if upgraded, being defacto archer tower on it's own.
As for heroes: Jack and Beresad. Eiskalt is too OP for being favourite.
Towers that needs buff by my opinion:
1) Shadow Assassins - they had only one useful skill (instakill), crow is meme, needs like 5x buff for being somehow worth, marking is too situational
2) Black Knights - they become worth only when full upgraded with minimal one full skill, which is expensive as hell. They need some cost reductions.
3) Forest - meme, shorter range that Furnace, lower DPS, Furnace stun so it's equal to slow effect of Forest, one skill worthless. I know it's great at stopping, but why stop, if you can kill?
I'm with you on this one. While in former games you could, depending on the level, spam towers with a few upgrades to help control the enemy waves, this entry seems to favor focusing on as few towers as possible upgraded as high as possible. Which is why I favor towers that fulfill multiple functions at the same time.
I feel the Forest works fine mechanically (but only shines in its last upgrade, preferably with 3 levels of trees and stun roots, which is needlessly expensive). If I was to change something it would be the cost of the upgrades or its area of effect, I feel like it's too small and I would use it more if it was bigger, like the Cemetery.

A cool and unexpected detail about the Blasting Furnace, that I forgot to mention before, is that it can damage incorporeal enemies, like ghosts. That is very useful during the post campaign on Impossible.
Blazing gem damage is insane and it's powerful against both powerful enemies and swarms (although not as good vs the latter as artillery towers) and it has a nice instakill.
Honorable mentions:
Skeleton tower - good damage and excellent minion support.
Furnace tower - great aoe damage and damage boost is nice too
frost dragon is just an awesome killing machine. I don't have the magma dragon yet so I can't compare but its base attack is amazing. lots of splash damage over and over and over again
Honorable mentions:
Margosa - easily the best early game hero, she can hold off entire lanes by herself sometimes with minimal support. yeah she's a one trick pony but it's a damn good trick. her regular attacks in beast form (which she can keep up almost non-stop) are better than most lvl 4 towers. if you're a newbie having trouble with the game level her up ASAP.
Black dragon - i like its abilities better than the frost dragon's, but its base attack is worse. trade-offs. i figure ice dragon is better because his skillset is more useful in the early game where I usually have the most trouble.
Favorite Towers? Nnn, the Mausoleum/Crypt one that spawns the gargoyles. I switch my towers around a lot but never really drop that one.
