CoI: When to rest 'em?
Playing back through the CC series now for the first time in quite a few years. Doing a short Operation in CoI last night reintroduced me to units needing "Rest". I know how to rest units - just click the rest button - but I'm unsure about how to do it wisely.

Since I'm locked into only a set number of units, each one resting is one that I can't have on hand for the battle (can't sub someone else in). This means if I have several units that need rest, I'm severely limiting my ability in the battle to come.

For this operation that was not an issue - I had ample points and rest was only required on the third battle (or the second attempt at the third battle). I could just Refit those guys and move on - plenty of points available, and it was the last battle of the operation (D-Day Russia).

Over a longer op or a campaign however I'm not sure this is wise - I might deplete my points, the force pool, or both (since a Retired or Refitted unit doesn't go back into the pool but requires you to take from it). So how do I strategically manage resting? Should I always rest a certain number of units even if they don't need it? Should I rest en masse and just kind of hope for a truce to try the battle again? Do I just ignore the requirement to rest?

In the original CC3 I used to have a rule for myself that if a group of units needed resting I would rest half of them in the current battle and half in the next.

I never fully worked out the combat penalty for having troops un-rested but that was the way i did it.

I would also always have at least one "throw away" unit in my force that I could replace it if I needed to rest 3-4 units at a time.

Don't worry too much about points, that is more tied to the difficulty setting and you will have a reset amount after each operation. Force Pool can be an issue, especially on higher difficulty and that's were a cheap rifle team comes in handy as a filler unit.

I think that will be still relevant to COI but it has triggered me to download it and have a game again!
