What is the point of machine guns?
with how little damage most of them do and their limited range what are they actually used for?

you can stun with them in an emergency, if you mean the vulcans

the actual machine gun guns are more for spraying, can be good in the lower ratings i guess but it's always burst damage that wins imo

I'm talking things like the Zaku Machine guns honestly all they need in general is a damage buff

Generally they are for when you are not wanting to stun allies, finishing off enemies, and for when you are needing to do ranged damage while on the move.

How good they are depends on the gun, zaku machine gun, mmp78(standard), and 100mm are really bad. Low rate of fire and the mmp has really low stun accumulation as well.

Bullpup and mmp80 are significantly better, with around 1k+ dps. Act zaku machine gun, cold districts machine gun, zaku kai, and other special ones are also quite powerful. The xeku eins type 3 has a machine gun that deals up to 1700dps base.

Vulcans however are special in that you can shoot while in high speed movement.

the Xeku I know is good but zeon low level ones are criminally bad

GM Rifle's pretty decent, if you're fine burst firing manually.

The weapons selection starts out pretty tame to help teach you and then typically gets more advanced the higher you go. You need to be weapons swapping on cooldown/reload and prioritizing targets you have advantage over. Getting consistent hits against an enemy you have advantage against with even something like a machine gun will melt them over a little bit of time and make them rethink what they're doing. One big advantage of the vulcans is they can be fired while you're boosting regardless of your suit's skills.

Following up a melee hit, mostly. So if your sword is on cooldown, chip away at them for a few seconds with an MG, hit the reload button and switch back to sword.

Zaku machine gun and mmp 78 are quite bad due to different reasons. MMP 80 is much better in general due to it's higher dps and either extremely fast reloads or grenade launcher.

If your allies are clustered together and you can't safely get a stun off without hitting them, using a machine gun to pepper enemies is probably your best move.

Atleast the zeon basic mgs are better than the federation ones, the bullpup and 100mm are really bad due to their lack of grenade launchers capabilities and still having mediocre characteristics.

The damage numbers are low, but they come out fast and you have a degree of auto aim on machine guns as well, making them reliable weapons, if a bit underwhelming when you need them.

I love playing the low cost zaku gundams. My zaku cannoneer is lvl 5 with a lvl 5 machine gun. Shooting at general mechs is 300+ dmg with a 42 round clip is pretty OP.

thing is for a lot of early mechs weapon swapping kinda doesn't do much as you have a ranged gun and a melee weapon with nades as your sub weapon

There is no real point in low cost machine guns unless it is a suit that has a good stun as a back-up, like the various low cost supports that can combo cannon into machine gun. On a suit that doesn't have a fast cooldown back-up stun they are pretty useless outside of fighting newer/weaker players. There are a few that have decent stagger value and DPS like Hizack or High Boost GM, but these are rare.

Ever had to finish off a Gouf but everything else was on reload/overheat and he has a sliver of health left? Yeah, thats where they shine if theyre not the type that can stun.

Machine guns are meant for sustained harrassment and outside of a few (the hizack machine gun for example) they are generally pretty bad. The xeku can work too a little bit at higher cost mainly due to people mostly running beam defense due to the nature of most higher costs suits
