Die and come back. Eat a zook, tackle someone going for your support, bait a meme beam, and that'll be on cooldown for your team to exploit. It'll take you 30 seconds to come back in at 700, 20 at a real cost. You can spawn in right behind the frontline, come in with full health, boost and ammo, get your mercy invulnerability, and be there for your team.
Some times repairing a bit helps.
If you are close to your base, you can do that.
Or you can choose to die at the right time.
You have to choose based on what is going on in the map but choosing to delay your death while still putting out damage is hard for some to do properly.
Repairing is not percentage base so the more health you have, the slower it goes.
While you can fire without losing the base repair effect, you can't move at all while it's going without breaking it (and rotating is free.) Which makes it really rare that it's even worth trying to go back and repair as again, it takes too long. Matches aren't long enough and respawn time too short to make it worth it.
But that's just my view on it.
Do you want NOT to feed your enemy scores or you want to stay in the fight to try to hold the front?
Something that is strong-ish but have little of HP like some Gaza's then repairs worth it more. With transformable suits you can fly to the base faster (albeit at the risk of being shooted down by some laser).
If you are a sniper you generally cling closer to the base. In junkyard space battle it's easier to go for repair than in space base, where time wasted on reaching the base often doesn't worth it.
The nice thing about repairing is that you kinda serve as a "base guard", especially if you have personel radar perk on your suit.
Otherwise I only fall back to repair if the fighting has lulled.
It's better to only repair when you have nothing more important to do. If you land a good shot to open an enemy to getting stomped or save a teammate from getting knocked around to death, it buffers the cost of you dying. So unless you're in a situation where you're certain your team is able to manage on their own, it's better to just stay in the fight and look for an opportunity to contribute.
Repairing on the field is only for emergencies with busted legs, repairing on the base isn't too bad but it's still a lot of time for a fraction of HP. You should try to gauge if your assistance will be necessary in the next 20 seconds (e.g. Enemy team isn't constantly rushing down your team, fights mostly being slow mid-range trades). If your team just wiped the enemy team one by one, you have the one decent opportunity to repair because they'll either wait on each other to respawn or 1 or 2 guys will respawn on their own and just get punched around.
