I'm dumb, what exactly is NFT?
And is NFT somehow going to affect our lives or this game to the point where we can't play it ? Just wondering.

You aren't dumb...NFTs are intentionally difficult to understand because it is a scam. It's taking advantage of people who are both lonely and have FOMO from the pandemic.

I can't even properly describe them without googling stuff.

I don't understand it, therefore it's a scam. Good one my dude.

NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. It's basically MTX but based on blockchain technology (crypto). It's simply a tool, which isn't inherently bad or good. How it's used depends on the intentions of the ones who implement it. Nothing to worry about beforehand.

Can you explain what the tool is for though?

I don't understand why a fringe population is paying large amounts for things that serve no apparent purpose besides harvesting personal data.

Explain it in a way a child can understand, using no acronyms.

It isn't fringe anymore, just a few geeks who like jpegs wouldn't have traded $25bn worth of them last year. These amounts are payed for same reasons why people overpay for art IRL: Speculation, the desire to be one of the first adopters in a new technological revolution and utility. They may have started as just jpegs but innovative people are finding new ways to utilize it by the day. In gaming, for example you could carry it between titles, evolve it and stuff like that rather than it dying along with the title you've purchased. More importantly, if implemented in true crypto ethos (which aims for decentralization), you'll be able to take ownership and store it in your own "vault", effectively becoming an asset and store of value, not just horse armor that dies with TES VI. This largely depends on how they're used of course. In the hands of your usual scummy AAA publisher that doesn't even let you play offline, they'll just use them to milk the consumer without relinquishing any control over it, as per usual.

Well you can put me in the "too dumb to understand it" camp.

I was too dumb to understand why bottled water would sell, but it took off like wildfire and some people got rich from it. I just have doubt in things that make no sense to me. Every attempt at explanation just leaves me confused.

If the argument is "convenience" but it doesn't actually make anything more convenient, I don't know what to think.

My best guess is that our base need to form social groups is being exploited here.

You need to get rid of the mindset "anything that i don't understand is a scam/exploitation". That is not the case. You'll just end up intellectually complacent. Ever thought about trying to increase your comprehension skills?

NFT's are a scam, end of story.

You can engage in wishful thinking, but it's still a scam.

It's effectively the art trade, but digitized.

You know what that's known for? Scams, money laundering, fakes & forgeries etc.

That's what NFT's are and nobody will ever step up to regulate them because it would mean an absolutely massive crash in value for the ones that are even worth anything, just like the art trade.

Big money laundering pyramid scheme that baits morons into spending thousands/millions on the receipt of a jpeg that says “you own this” as long as the server/blockchain hosting the image stays up.

Oh it’s also harmful as ♥♥♥♥ to the environment because of the ridiculous amount energy required to turn these things into NFTs.

Tl;dr: Scam

Edit: Forgot to mention how most of the NFTs are stolen from artists who did not give permission for them to be used + don’t even receive a penny from the sale of stolen images.

So, we received some free NFTs in SBB (didn't claim any, before you start foaming at the mouth).

Are you saying that in this case, the artists didn't give permission to use their art? Or are you just generalizing?

Regarding the environment, we should start with regulating the big things, like fossil fuel use and the car industry, switching electricity production to renewable sources, decreasing the release of CO2 in the atmosphere. Electricity is used everywhere, and it's not the use but the methods of production that are the main problem.

Yes, there are a lot of big changes that have to happen to help the environment, but there are also things that we do everyday that can make a difference. Saying the absolute worst offenders have to be tackled first is whataboutism and a convenient way of delaying action on other things that are very actionable. We all make choices day to day that help or hinder the process.
One thing to point out is that whether you're for or against NFTs is moot on Steam.
The entire platform is against the use of NFTs in games.
Considering this game's only platform seems to be Steam, I'm truly confused by their choice to do something like this. They must think their whole playerbase will immediately flock to whatever platform they settle on after Steam removes them from the store.

It's probably going to be ready for mobile soon.

This video will explain why NFTs are an inherently bad idea that leaves a few select very rich while the vast majority will end up poorer than ever.

NFTs are are a type of scam where people try to convince you to buy a digital receipt on a blockchain that purports to represent ownership of something. Literally the only thing you actually gain "ownership" of is the receipt itself given the game devs will continue to own all aspects of the product and can revoke it from you at any time.

The goal of NFT boosters is to convince you this receipt has value such that they can profit from your ignorance by selling you this receipt and leave you holding the bag when the scam collapses. Stay far, far away from any "game" that relies on NFTs for their monetization scheme.
