Amusingly the team maintaining that mod is reportedly over 10 times the size of the development team for the base game. :D
I haven't played the mod personally but some folks here have said good things about it (while admitting it sometimes has bugs or glitches). But if you want co-op multiplayer that's likely the best you're going to get
Just need the r2modman and search for the Nebula MP package and press launch with mods(after having launched the game once).
Say there's a white science cube on a belt and 2 players pick it up at the exact same moment, what's the result? You probably don't want there to be 2 players each holding a white science cube then, nor that the player closest to the game host (lowest ping) always wins that, so essentially you want every item/building/etc at the core of the game to be aware that they can be manipulated by multiple players at the same time and how to handle that case.
(A one-person webshop can get away with sending an "oops, I had stock of 1 of that item, but 2 go ordered, so I need to cancel one" e-mail, while OTOH Amazon needs to automatically handle such a case at the latest at the order completion button press.)
