Soil Pile System
Personally I am not a fan of the system. I feel that building and placing foundations is all that should be required to fill in water.
I don't think that placing dozens of random buildings in one spot, then immediately deleting them, in order to be able to place foundations somewhere else, adds anything to the game-play. It is just tedious.

How do other people feel about the system?

Why can't I mine rocks and turn them into soil?
Saint_Aint Feb 16, 2021 @ 4:36am
Because rocks are better suited for concrete production.

However, in this game, they could be smelted into soil at some ratio. Perhaps a recipe that takes 3 stone that gives you 1 soil and 1 block over 3 seconds.

Not being able to produce soil
Not being able to dig holes on some planet to fill up soil pile by a lot
Having a magical pocket dimension that can hold infinite soil pile somehow.

Too many things that seem out of place to me so for now i'm using a mod that just consumes more foundations when i'm low on soil pile.

I don't place buildings then delete them. I wait and use the land and then eventually I might fill in the odd sea or lake. I like the system. Makes sense.

Think you have that backwards.. since it usually takes around 6 spades of sand, 4 spades of gravel and 4 spades of cement to make a single load of concrete..

Personally, as somebody who avoided filling in the water, I have A LOT of soil pile that I can fill things with, Millions of the stuff...

However... yeah, I'm not keen on the system either.

I like the soil system but I tend to avoid using landfill unless absolutely necessary. Having to work with the geography of a watery world or seas of lava is part of the challenge of the game. The main thing I use it for is to bury sections of a vein that ends up being in the way.

Not a fan of the snooker ball approach.

Water has different depths so it should be the case that you need to reclaim the land in some way before concreting over it. Maybe instead of soil, the depth should be used to dictate needing more landfill per square.

It's a dumb system. you manufacture foundation blocks - they should be enough to fill in the holes without using the contents of some "infinite pocket" that holds all the leftover soil from placing buildings.

There is nothing for me to have backwards. Stones (I said rocks in response to the person I was replying to) are used in concrete production, correct? That is all I said. I did not infer that was the only thing that was needed.

I feel like the soil system is a meaningless system that just adds pointless restrictions on stuff that doesn't need to be restricted. You could remove it right this second I would bet that most people wouldn't even notice it was gone.
also I find it dumb that we walk around as a giant robot building factories to shoot a rocket into space in order to build a Giant structure around a star to collect its energy but we can't fill in a hole or build over it.

Yeap I'm tapping out because of this.

Also they do all this and you can't rebind the E key. Two things that basically destroys the game for me. Oh well.

Its an incentive to use foundation, foundations look good, I got 5M soils and I'm really happy it's not a other item to produce and manage. It's a detail you overlooked and now you feel 'stuck' but you can fix your soil problem by just making a habit of laying clean, industrial foundation and not eating of the ground like the pigs.

It's a good system. Every complaint I'm seeing about this game seems to be coming from a "factorio did it better" mind set, even when that game isn't even mentioned by the person complaining.

It's nice to have a game with a different approach to things. Small restrictions here and there, consequences to poor management, etc. If they cave and make all the changes people are whining for, people will lose interest because it will be just another bland factory builder. With the design it has now, it has unique character to it.

I like that you can't just pave over every world you want to build on but there's got to be a better way to set that up than the current system.

Except that it is another item to produce and manage.
The problem with the system is not so much the fact that you need soil. It is the method you get it. You get soil by manually placing something, be that a building or as you suggest by placing foundations all over the land. In a game all about automation, you should not have to obtain a resource 'by hand' You should be able to obtain soil via an automated process.
Whether that is processing stone, or just mining it.
