Dark fog items drop
So, does anyone know how to collect the new dark fog items?
for example, the items needed to make the dark fog smelter and assembler, I thought these items dropped from the dark fog hive but in space no item is dropped, at least not that I know of

Make killbox of (laser) turrets that will target anything around base excepting building itself, let it run for a while, this will lvl up DF in that system.

Make battlefield analysis bases with item filters for what do you want.

Once desired items start dropping incorporate them into production.

wait what? there is a dark fog smelter?

Yes, farm the ground bases to level them up.
Every three levels they drop a new kind of alien item. Collect these with a battlefield analysis building and eventually you will get new technologies to research in your lab using the alien items. The first is assembler Mk4, then a matrix lab that runs 3x faster than the default. I am currently at level 20 and have both of those. I assume at lvl 21 you get tech to make the smelter Mk3. You also use the drops to make the alien machines.

But I don't understand, what I did to farm was place missile turrets and wait for the dark fog to attack, is that right? I didn't understand the part about using laser turrets

You have to let them come to you and set up your defenses to be just shy of their base. As they expand their footprint, they will come into range. When you put down a turret, you can see a circle that is their area of attack. Don't let that circle cross the main central building.
Also put down a Battlefield Analysis base behind the row of turrets to collect your loot and to repair the turrets.
Missile and Gauss turrets will work but laser turrets do not use resources other than energy so you could run out of bullets or missiles while you are gone and you will get overrun.
I use a combination of Gauss, Laser, Missile and Explosive turrets.

Laser turrets run off your energy grid rather than materials, which on late game setups is a drop in the bucket to use, while the latter could run out of materials eventually unless you're playing on infinite multiplier.

However, as long as you have a mass-setup of turrets that lets the DK come to that spot/survive their attacks, you can generally use whichever kind you want.

Yep - by which we mean an advanced (3x speed) player smelter that utilizes dark fog tech.

In fact the expansion added 3 new secret structures, plus a new secret fuel source. To unlock them you need to pick up (have in Icarus' inventory) different high level dark fog drops, which will trigger an narrator speech and add a secret research to the tech tree -- research it to unlock the associated dark fog tech building.

The buildings are
1. Negentropy Smelter (3x speed smelter)
2. Self-evolution Lab (faster matrix lab)
3. Re-composing Assembler (faster assembler)

But I can't quickly check which drop (at which level) grants each buildings. And then to make the buildings you need to more dark fog items plus the base building type -- so to get these buildings you'll probably need to farm the dark fog.
