Found a Dark Fog seed in the star map
I was looking at new systems to travel to and spotted a spiky read object (see screenshot). It says it's 7 LYs out, but not sure how long it will take to reach my home system since I don't know it's speed. I'll keep track of it's progress and report back if I come up with how long it takes to go a LY.

they travel ~1200m/s I'm too lazy to run a calculation so just double click it, reach that speed towards it and see ETA to check. I'd say ~6h.
You can intercept it with Icarus. It has no defences just ton of HP.

You could be right. I got about 30 minutes per light year which would be 1,333 m/s. However, there is room for error. I met the DF seed when it just arrived, destroyed it, and then looked at the star map. Yep, a new seed was coming from a star 6 LY away. Will need to plan my excursions to other star systems so as not be away when DF comes to play.

From what I understand, if you can keep the dark fog from establishing ground bases in the system then the space hive is starved of material and thus unable to do much.

So having missile/plasma batteries setup to shot down incoming relays to keep them from building bases will stop them in their tracks.

You can also be a bit more proactive about it -- set a nav point on a seed while it's still in deep space, and warp out to engage it there. (Double-clicking on it, just like the tool tip says, sets the nav point) So you don't need to wait to meet it in its destination system.

Also if you have your space fleet checkbox set to engage relay stations then they'll automatically launch and help you kill the seed.
(Actually a couple of times, at minimum warp speed, I managed to pass it so closely, before hitting CAPS LOCK to drop out of war, that my fleet launched while I was still in warp and by the time I was able to drop out, u-turn, and get back to the seed they'd already killed it for me :D)

I can't wait when space combat will be expanded, I'm loving every moment of this update. Though I was raised by Factorio rampant mod so yeah I'm a tough cookie to crack.
What those seeds are for? I killed and nothing happens.

They're (slowly) flying through space to infest some star system. If they arrive they'll set up a space hive and start sending relay stations to establish planetary bases. (If you kill them in deep space then they don't arrive and nothing else happens)

If you click on them you'll get an info pop-up telling you which system launched the seed, where it's heading, and how far it is from its destination.

One reason to not engage in space is time. One seed came from a system 4 LYs away so I only had a couple of hours before it entered my "clean" system. The next seed came from 36 LYs away. That gave me a long time to do other things and ignore it. So, seeds from close systems might be worth going after in deep space. Ones from far way I would just leave along and enjoy the hassle free time.
