Enemy units drop semi-random resources when they die, including a brand new fuel type you can only get from killing them that increases your mech's personal fabricator.
You just need a battlefield analyzer to pick the stuff up automatically, otherwise you pick it up in combat mode by left clicking it.
And I think someone mentioned that the enemies drop more and better stuff the higher their level goes.
The first several waves, at least in my limited experience, drop "soil pile" which can be useful should you want to pave over your starting planet with concrete. It is easy to miss that they drop that resource as it does not actually appear in your inventory -- only indication is the +xxx soil pile pop-up messages at the bottom right-hand side of the screen. It does briefly appear on the ground but is quickly gathered should Icarus ever come within range unlike other resources which have to be actively recycled or destroyed.
Then from another, at somewhere among the highest levels, the Dark Fog drop some sort of material that's needed for a 3x speed Smelter, Assembler, and so forth
farming the first dark fog right now... its almost level 9
