This is my first ever attempt at playing one of these factorio games. Any suggestions for good You Tube tutorials?
NF_Crenos Jan 1, 2024 @ 7:15pm
Yes, it is, lol.
Youtuber and twitch streamer Nilaus makes tons of videos on automation games, especially Factorio and DSP. He also shares his blueprints.
Also, Factorio is probably the easier game between it and DSP.

Nilaus has good videos, tutorials and blueprints. However, I recommend not using someone else's optimized blueprints. Optimizing yourself is the core of the game. As a newbie, the dark fog should also be turned down at least one level.

JD is also a great one
Althought he is an australian so he is a bit..... wierd... :D

Nilaus has an interesting series going right now using max difficulty Dark Fog settings. I'm enjoying them. I normally don't watch many of his, though, because it seems to just be the stamping down of blueprints for whatever. He may actually built things in his live streams that later become these blueprints, but I don't have several hours to devote to watching the streams.
JD Plays is probably the only other one for tips & tricks. He can take some getting used to.

well the game is a few years old and he is using oldprints from the older version of the game.
Anyone who played the game before would have made quite a few blueprints already if smart enough.
JD is also playing max difficulty.

It's a single player game, so there's no reason for you to feel bad about being a dummy. You can play at your own pace, and choose to play however you want as long as it's fun :)

In addition to the tubers suggested, Dutch actuary has some good tutorials aswell.

No need to stare yourself blind on other peoples solutions and blueprints, big part of the fun is figuring out ratios and making your own blueprints.

One big tip is to always calculate backwards with your goal in mind.
I.e , "i want 100 blue science per minute" so i need x circuits per minute, which needs x plates per minute .. and so on.
a pen and paper to take notes is recommended if you dont wanna use online calculators.

The game pretty much expects you to rip stuff down and rebuild at certain intervals as you go through the tech-tree, so don't feel bad if your first factories are spaghetti nightmares.

Good luck and have fun :steamhappy:

I'd suggest making sure you either disable dark fog or at least make it so it doesn't attack you, that way you can figure things out at your pace without the extra pressure.

if you're not getting frustrated too much i'd recommend staying away from tutorials for your first run and have dark fog off or on passive.
The first run is when you get the most glorious spaghetti.

Embrace the Logistic Spaghetti!

I do agree with @Kazouie above:
Dial down the Dark Fog features for your first run(s).

I have to admit that I'm rather enjoying my 1st run currently.
The Fog is active but on slower side.

My starting system seems to be a bit more.. sparse on certain critical resources as other people's runs seem to be. This alone has given me quite a lot of extra headaches to solve.

And couple of times so far, The Fog has managed to infiltrate my planets, giving me welcome distractions that has demanded immediate attention BUT I can still figure out defences/attacks almost at my own pace once I'm there.

It's not been "overwhelming" since the first 2 Turrets I constructed, sure, but pleasantly controllable layer of stuff I can observe, research and learn on the side.

Stay away from all videos and learn by playing. That is the only way to have fun

I believe the correct technical term is "Belt spaghet". =)

Find your own fun, learn the game by playing and ask questions rather than watching a video telling you to play their way or you're doing it wrong. Don't let the cult of meta dictate what you find enjoyable.

Definitely make your own blueprints, so you learn the quirks and are able to problem solve the ones borrowed from elsewhere. A fair number of them won't have QoL things like tagged belts. The ones I've made for early smelting arrays have a low building count and while the fiddly bits done most of the middle is missing. I then know how much room will be needed and have the option to copy paste in sections as and when I need to expand.

Generally if you think a setup works then make it blueprint and if you want to tweak it then use a creative save.

Most creators seem to have hopped onto the max difficulty bandwagon which is fine as they want views but doesn't do a huge amount for someone new to the game after info

Yeah I get that! Doing my first run with dark fog on default settings and my starting system is brutal compared to what I am used to. No lava planet (gobi instead), and my ice planet is a desolate planet far away with fire ice (but covered by enemy base), with no coal, 0%wind power and 54% solar. power generation there has been brutal!
