Time to focus on performance? (Regression in Dark Fog patch)
Hey team,

thanks for releasing this patch. Is it now time to focus on performance? My current save games with large spheres in many systems now perform much much worse framerate wise.

My main save used to be playable but not anymore, it lags and drops below 25fps constantly now. Please come back and optimise the performance of this game.

I run a Ryzen 3800 CPU, 32GB of DDR4 3600mhz RAM, and a 6700XT.

The game is CPU limited.
Nope, at least not for my setup. The cpu sits at comfortable 40% for me no core going above 70%, so does GPU btw. Even stressing it in the background gives 0 performance impact. If you check what your CPU is doing it's mostly "Draw calls" which are interrupts towards GPU. Which leads me to believe the game uses GPU for calculations. Which is smart since they are made made for that
Tell you know absolutely NOTHING about anything related to this games bottleneck in one single line...

Just an observation, but I noticed that most complaints of crashes and low FPS seem to be people with AMD CPUs. I tend to read a lot of the problem reports and just happen to notice it.

I thought perhaps it was AMD GPUs being the issue, (because of uploading code onto the GPU), but it seems the nvidia and amd both have the issues.

I googled a little "unity amd CPU issues" and there seems to be quite a lot of issues that came up. Several mentions of DX12 show up, along with mentions of firmware issues.

You might want to investigate this?

I don't have any issues (intel CPU and nvidia GPU), but I am a new player and don't have a large world yet.

No dude, it's not an AMD problem.
It's a CPU bottleneck problem. (Which oddly enough means you'll get better performance from an AMD GPU once the CPU bottleneck is really restrictive)
The game 'functionally' only uses 4 threads, and the main thread gets saturated as hell as soon as all the defenses etc are placed about to deal with the fog.

I've got an Ryzen 6700 XT GPU, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-core CPU, and framerate is really poor (sub 15 FPS) and 32GB RAM.

However, live measurement shows that both my CPU and GPU are severely under utilized? Way below 40% even.

I'm not sure that the GPU compute stuff that DSP does is being counted with the GPU load for rendering to your display. (Supposedly does, perhaps?)

Otherwise, it means the bottleneck limiting performance is somewhere else. Possible candidates are memory bandwidth between RAM, CPU, and GPU; or maybe simply thread dispatch/join synchronization and communication overhead is causing stalling. You might try increasing or decreasing the # of threads in the game settings and seeing whether it makes any difference.

Fwiw my i5-3570k performs pretty similarly...and that cpu is going on 13 years old. Doubt your hardware makes a big difference, sounds like the game isnt utilising your system resources properly. My CPU is also closer to the 80-100% load area.
