[SOLVED(?)] Saving crashes
this is really starting to bug me down.. anyone else experiencing crashes when saving the game? sometimes it freezes during auto-save, others just with regular saves.. I thought I had it figured out by deleting or disabling auto-save but it keeps crashing even for regular saves.. :steamfacepalm:

[UPDATE] After going crazy for a week with random BSOD's and crashes all over, I managed to stabilize the system and (so far) running smoothly.. here's what worked for me:

- Plugged PC directly into its own dedicated socket.. (can't hurt..) I'm running with a 1200W PSU (didn't change any hardware)
- On the NVIDiA Control panel, 3D Settings changed the "Power Management mode" settings from Normal to "Maximum Performance" ^^
- On the desktop size Changed the Scaling setting from "Aspect ratio" to "Full Screen"
- Enabled the automatic tuning on the Geforce Experience

Card drivers unchanged, i9-13k running with 64DDR5 on W11 with an 4090. Since I'm playing with maxed settings on 5120x1440 it is possible that the consumption was spiking and destabilizing the system.. the BSODs got so random that it felt like an NVMe/memory/MB issue.

Now it's been running smoothly for a day, DSP launches on first try, all saves are good and no more freezes or BSODs so it seem like it was a power/settings issue (which is a little weird considering that two weeks ago the system was very stable and running smoothly pretty much anything else..) also unclear why it would relate to the saves, but anyways..

Now I can sleep.. :p

Only for info :
No, no problems on my side

Neither have I had any problems with saving my progress.

Some things to consider:
1 - Does your drive have enough space; depending on how far you are into the game, the save file sizes can become significant. For example, my save game directory for my main quest completed game prior to the Rise of the Dark Fog is approximately 3GB in size across the 230 save files. While my current Rise of the Dark Fog game directory is almost 580MB across the 73 save files -- not sure what it will be by the time it is completed since the latest patch brought significant changes.
2 - Are you using any mods; I have seen elsewhere in the steam discussions that some mods have had a detrimental impact on some players games.

having the same issue - keep fiddling with the settings to get this to stop, but nothing seems to work - only started with the dark fog update

No mods, plenty of space.. but the size of those savegames is definitely becoming increasingly ridiculous.. I don't recall seeing any other game with multi GB saves.. in any case, it keeps getting worse, crashes every 10 min or every other save.. I went ahead and installed it on a different computer with different everything, it does the same.. so perhaps there's something messed up with my game file..

I tried renaming auto-saved files as soon as they are saved, and it does seem to somewhat extend the time between crashes, but sooner or later it ends up crashing on save.

Nothing wrong with your setup.
The save-files are NOT optimised in any means.
And will not until later in Development.

And they bloat up if you build MASSIVE factories and multiple Dysons Spheres

Clearly it has to be adressed some time before this game get out of the early access, but since then, I can live with it and start a new game when the saves get to big.

But iirc there is a mod which can shrink the saves. But only irrc, because I do not use mods.

Are you on SSD for both the game and for save files? Sounds like a hardware issue.

When all hope for a peaceful holiday gaming was lost.. somehow everything got resolved.. ^^

Same problem here, crashing on save/autosave. Fixed it by switching graphics to 1920x1080

BSOD would suggest hardware/stability issue. The save process does spike the CPU quite a bit... Let me guess, Intel 14900K? Those have had their fair share of issues lately when stressed hard.

I've never had a problem with crashing until the past few days, when the game crashes if I am on the planet where Dark Fog farming is being done and have been there awhile. I don't know whether it is during an attempt to auto-save, or just at some random moment.

YES! my game crashes all the time these days. auto saves usually, and i'm on new play throughs, no big save files. so i've begun manually saving to save progress cus i keep having to restart from previous successful auto saves and manual saves sometimes crash it as well.

i thought maybe it was just a corrupted play through, so i trashed that save file and started fresh again and it's crashed around 4 times in 5 hours

i9 4090

i'll try your suggestion. i'm bummed it involves gforce experience, i hate having that installed, but if i can play dsp for 2 hours without a crash, i'll consider it a win

One thing I learned years ago is to Never install Gforce Experience. Just install the driver.
Only time I have a crash in this game, is when installing an old Mod that has not been updated for the current game version.

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 22H2 Motherboard ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO - Southbridge X570 r51 Processor AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core Memory 64 GB Ram Video Card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, 8 GB video ram

Might be best to report the bug to the developers in accordance with one of the pinned posts above.

Also note that things reported two years ago most likely do not apply any more to the current game and with the latest video drivers. This is one of the reasons it is not recommended to Necro an old thread.

i normally agree re gforce experience. i did try it, however, turning on the `automatic tuning` in the Performance tab, and i haven't had a crash in several hours.

i wasn't able to complete any of the other suggestions from the OP. so, unless i'm jumping the gun and the issue will pop up right after i post this, i think it's solved!!!
