once combat gets released, on a new game, you can carry over some progress from previous play, so you can tech up faster.
They're working on an entire combat element that comes with weapons and fighting yes, but as they mentioned in their dev log, they're trying to optimize having massive numbers of enemies persistent on your computer without absolutely wrecking your FPS.
