im about to get the warp drive soon
but does it really take hours to fly to another star on sail power when its 4-5 light years away? how is it calculated, the eta didnt change when I upgraded my max sail speed from 300 to 1000. by now my max speed is probably even higher.

well even at max normal speed it's roughly 40 minutes to the closest star. Warpdrive will take you there in about 30 seconds or so.

ETA is based on your current speed, so it will change as you accelerate towards that object. It will also change massively down if you engage the warp engine.

But ya it can take hours to non FTL between systems.

Just keep in mine that the warp drive uses a lot of power, so have spare energy dense fuel and warpers. Also your max war distance is based on your energy core (how big the battery) + your energy regen (energy circuit level + fuel type).

Plus there is a logistics engine upgrade that you need for logistics ships to be allowed to use warpers.

For DSP the devs set 1 AU = 40 km & 1 LY = 60 AU (= 2400 km).

So at 1000 m/s you'd cover 4 LY in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
4 LY * (2400 km/LY) * (1000 km/m) / (1000 m/s) = 9,600s

If you'd upgraded your sail to 2000 m/s then it'd be half that time, 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The initial warp speed is, IIRC, 12 AU/s (or 480,000 m/s). That'd cover that same 4 LY distance in 20 seconds.
4 LY * (2400 km/LY) * (1000 km/m) / (480000 m/s) = 20s

One of the not-so-great achievements, I believe its' called "Before Your Time" or something like that. Travel to a new star system before you have warp tech. I might have to go seed farming for a star layout to make that one less painful.

Trick I did for that one was get the 2000 M/S sail upgrade, then point at the closest system get to max speed, set a timer based on the ETA and then go play something else. With some periodic checks to confirm that I was still on a decent course.

Note - it is possible do to this achievement after you research and make warpers; just as long as you haven't completed the research on Drive Engine lvl 4.

(So you can grab some warpers, head off under sail, eventually get the achievement, finish researching Drive Engine 4 and then warp back to continue your game)
Or, if you don't care about what might have gotten made during those couple hours just make a save before you leave and load it after the achievement unlocks.
Either way you save yourself the couple hours of flying back at non-warp speed.

But, I also got this one the same way teron did. Got up to speed, set a timer, and went and did something else while waiting.
