For mods installed through r2modman to work you have to start the game from the r2modman interface with the 'Start modded' button at the top left.
If you start through the steam interface or use the 'Start vanilla' button in r2modman the game is started without mods.
That was my problem all along. I used a shortcut for the game, not the button inside r2modman. I really don't remember using it to start the game before I took my break, but I must have been.
I've been slowly adding mods and testing. So far, so good. No red box, all working.
Seriously, I'm an idiot.
PS: for those too lazy to look for the other thread, this functionality is now part of the vanilla DSP through the traffic monitor building.
