shooting by your planet. And getting back to it..
The turning, flight controls and camera to eventualy reach the planet is no fun. No fun at all.

Now an hour later. I have reloaded a dozen saves. And still iam fighting the controls to get back to the frekking original planet, the flight controls are the worst if you have made a mistake. I will need to go back much farter in my saves and just keep frekking shooting back at my original planet. What a waste

I just aim at the planet, press w (which aligns your mech to the planet or system you aiming at) and hold shift to speed up. Keep spamming w to stay on target and just crash into the planet. Very quick.

The only time I've had trouble getting to my planet is when I ran out of fuel. As long as you have fuel and you aim at it with 'w' you'll be fine.

Yeah, like Kenji, I only had problems when I ran out of fuel. I found it was tempting to just blow the entire load getting up to maximum sail speed, then I had nothing left for course correction once I got to the planet. I spent a long time trying to recover, and the only solution was to just be patient until I built up enough energy and then use it for minor course corrections getting back to the planet, followed by one good thrust into the center to crash land.

They mean flight controls.

Someone already mentioned it but i steer my aiming my mouse cursor at the planet and hit W until my mecha is aligned and heading towards that point. Also dont accelerate until you have zero fuel left. Save at least 1/4 to 1/3 for deceleration. As you upgrade your mech more and more you can adjust the amount of deceleration fuel you need to suit your mecha's upgraded speed and recharge rate. But for your very first space flight to a faraway planet, aim towards it like i mentioned above and just accelerate until you have 1/4 to 1/3 tank of fuel remaining. Start your deceleration at around 0.25 au on your first trip out. As you get more experience flying you can start your decel at a much closer range.

It takes some practice, but you can get good at piloting the mecha. Remember that TAB will toggle mouse control on and off, and even with it off you can use mouse3 to move the target box. Just remember that once you get the box on your target, you have to use W to actually alter the course of the mecha to where it's pointing. Then you can accel/decel all you want without problems.

Also, hard crashing into a planet at 2000 m/s does no damage so I let it happen, easier than trying to manage a gentle landing. :) Maybe someday they will patch in cratering and having to repair your mecha and I will have to learn how to fly properly. :) :) :)

If you wanna land on a Planet aim right at it and hold W.

Smashing right into the ground. Works even in warp speed

Flight controls take a while to get used to. A few tips:
Always save BEFORE jumping off planet.
Carry a full load of fuel. Energetic Graphite is quick and easy to max out and makes a great 1st space fuel.
Escape the gravity well as quickly as possible. Orbital mechanics are weird and will destroy your energy supply.
Point at target and hold W.

It would be nice if there was a target leading indicator for planets. Also the map view is pretty silly, it frequently shows the flat view of the system which isn't useful.

I like that it's been done this way to be honest. It feels more realistic being sucked into gravity fields of nearby planets, and the real danger of overshooting a planet because the momentum of your trajectory is off. It adds a sense of danger and tension because you are likely carrying limited fuel and that makes inter-planetary travel a riskier venture than just point and land. I do like this, and yes, I've been caught in space sailing way past my planet and my mech's battery power at zero so I can barely make adjustments.

Getting thrown around by orbital mechanics is pretty fun. Having it burn through your energy isn't. It doesn't really make sense and is a serious obstacle to early game flight.

Soft locking is similarly not an enjoyable experience. If the player solution is to "load game" then it's not working out.

72099627 is my current seed, nothing remarkable but the starter system is a gas giant with three moons and a homeworld that's about 50% water. Almost every planet hop involves being caught by one gravity well or another.

Burning too much energy is more about self control than game control. If you're obliterating your power reserve in order to go fast then it's not the games fault. Just because you can got at 2000km/s doesn't mean you should at every opportunity. You can escape orbit at a tenth of that and for most home systems half that maximum is plenty.

The flight controls are an insanely simple point and shoot, halo driving was the same style, or point at where the orbit will take a planet and meet up with it.
Dragorin Feb 20, 2021 @ 6:41am
You ran yourself out of fuel, it takes fuel to turn and slow down. Don't drain the tank trying to go as fast as you can. Upgrade your fuel source as soon as you can as well. Energetic Graphite is good for your first few flights but upgrade to Hydrogen as soon as you can then Deuteron should soon be in reach. Once you get Antimatter fuel rods you'll never worry about power in your mech again.
Maximum Poi Feb 20, 2021 @ 8:07am
The controls are really easy, way easier than say Elite Dangerous. You just rotate the camera till the name of the planet shows up point towards it and HAVE SOME PATIENCE and you'll get there. If you aim straight at the planet and just crash into it you don't have to even worry about landing. Don't try to do something the game isn't programmed to do by trying to land like an airplane or spaceship.

If it really takes you an hour to go between planets you're doing something seriously wrong or just lack any kind skill and most likely have zero patience and probably want instant wrap/fast travel.
Knottypine Feb 20, 2021 @ 8:48am
I've never overflown a planet in this game in my dozens of flights. So I can't relate. One tip would be to slow down on your approach. As others have mentioned, keep hitting 'W' to align towards your target. However, keep in mind the planet is obviously moving in an orbit, so when closer, don't align directly towards the planet. Align yourself in it's path. When lined up for a good landing, you shouldn't see the planet moving in any other direction but towards you. Slowing down helps, don't try and smash into the planet at 1000-2000 m/s.
