Dyson shell orbit size
Does this matter for anything besides looks? Does a larger shell require more materials? Does a larger shell give less/more/same power? Thinking technically it should be the same power regardless of size because the star is putting out the same amount of energy regardless of how far away you catch the energy. Unless you make the shell so large that a planet is inside, of course. (Which I can do in my starter system but didn't make it that big)

Has anyone experimented with this?

The bigger the sphere, the better the power output, essentially.

You should still probably start out building the smallest sphere possible though, it'll still be more than enough and it won't cost more resources to complete than you have in your home system. You can layer as many of them as you want later without losing efficiency.

I think yes, Larger shell = more materials, material = more output power.

So building a really big one will require more material, but will also output much more power.

Yes, larger shell == more mats and more power.

Also, the Luminosity of the star you build your sphere around multiplies the outpout power of the sphere...

On top of that, you can build a sphere large enough in some systems where the first planet is inside the sphere, which means the Ray Receivers never disconnect... They end up producing massive amounts of power and photons...

Screenshot below was on my first playthrough, the sphere is as large as possible, the middle belt is only about 1/10th finished, the first planet has over 200 receivers and producing WAAaayy more energy and critical photons that I could ever need.

Later in the game I was launching up to 8 ships per second, and around 30 solar sails a second...

I never needed so much power as it was worth building the dyson sphere in the first place ... What's the point of it?

The Larger the Radius of the Sun the Larger the Orbits can be. A 20-22 Radius System can create orbits with 240.000 km (and minimum 22.500 km).

The other important value is Luminosity. A system with 2.5 Luminosity generates more than twice the amount of your normal starter-system with the same sized sphere.

However. Even the smaller sphere of 4.000 km is an undertaking and I invite you to start with the smallest version to have it finished within reasonable time and effort. You can build a larger one later if you really want to.

it's the point of the game... It's literally in it's name if you hadn't noticed...

and it's EA...

I mean.... now that I think of it, that's probably the stupidest question I've ever encountered..

Why kill big bad bosses in MMORPG's? To get loot to fight other bosses, or because you enjoy the game?

If you can't answer that then you were never a gamer in the first place.

Why build a Dyson Sphere in a game called...Dyson Sphere...hmm...I know I can figgure this one out if I think hard about it...

No need to be rude. I was asking myself the same question last week. I had more than enough power on wind to fuel all colors of science, Dyson sphere didn't seem important functionally. For a game to feel meaningful I like all systems to serve a beneficial function. While it does seem obvious, I think the deeper quandary here is "what good is it to my game?".

I see now, when getting into high massive factories, having the Dyson power to ship around the cluster can be very useful indeed.
