1) There seems to be no relationship between the orientation of planet view and that of the main view. Pressing 'N' does nothing to the latter. If I see something on the planet view that I'd like to explore further, I have no idea what direction to move to get there.
2) Reloadng a saved game might face me in a different direction than I was facing when I saved it.
3) If I walk around exploring the planet and gathering wood, stones, etc., the view of my developed base might be facing a different direction when returning than when I left.
4) The only way to change the camera direction of the main view requires a middle mouse button. My mouse doesn't have one. In fact, I don't know whether I have ever seen a mouse with three buttons and a wheel. Is there an alternative, or am I out of luck? Such a mouse should be part of the specified system requirements, it's that important.
Result: confusion and disorientation.
The middle mouse button IS the mouse wheel. Just press down on the wheel.
1 - Map view and normal view are not linked except through the transition. When you enter map view it simple zooms out in the current orientation. Middle mouse button (pressing the scroll wheel) will also allow you to adjust the viewing angle as well as pressing N to orient the north pole at the top of the screen. When returning to the regular view the transition is again very telling -- First the map view reorients to the same way you entered the map view, and then it zooms back in on the Icarus. Seems very intuitive if you watch the smooth transitions.
2 - Loading a game and have a different orientation shouldn't be an issue as long as you know where you and can adjust your orientation. I think knowing about the scroll wheel button will alleviate this issue.
3 - The different orientations while wandering around the planet are a result of the planet being a sphere, not a normal grid map. Your view is rotating around the planet so if you don't retrace your steps exactly the orientation is going to be different when you reach the same spot. Again, I think once you're comfortable adjusting your orientation with the scroll wheel button this won't be an issue.
4 - Middle mouse button = Pressing and holding down the scroll wheel
Hope this helps!
Duh-- so I just discovered myself after trying it in desperation. Thanks, I should have known that for years. It solves the main problem. Yes, changing the direction of view is easy once you explained how to do it, and I use it often to examine details. However, I want to face north most of the time. One might add to the explanation that pressing B (build) shows the grid in green, and by this means the view can be fine-tuned to face exactly north (or near enough).
