Soil Pile
Is driving me crazy. It’s annoying to have to terraform stuff that I don’t want to terraform so I then can terraform stuff I do want.

Is there another way to implement this mechanic? Make it cost more stone or something else that I can auto mine?

Your best solution would be to find a planet you can remove a bunch of hills from to use on other planets.

Just make sure you increase your size of foundation laying to the maximum size, 10x10, to collect soil faster and automate foundation crafting so you can get a lot while doing other things.

You can even ship them to other planets with logistic stations for certain planets with automation so you have storages full when you visit them for more soil.

Otherwise if you are just starting out you will be best to avoid building near large lakes or even visiting ocean worlds until you can deal with them easier or make your main building world on something with a large amount of building space like you can find at times if you are lucky enough to find one in your starting system.

The soil mechanic is easily my least favorite. I use a mod to eliminate it.

It’s just a low level irritant that drives you crazy after a while and can be improved upon.

I can go to a desert plane and get massive soil pile but then I can just move my main base there and don’t need soil pile.

So the idea is neat but doesn’t really work

You gotta automate foundation. The only thing your probably going to use stone for besides glass is foundation (bricks). And iron is the most abundant resource besides hydrogen. You need so little glass compared to everything else, I even use stone to make silicon ore lol

My WellRounded mod has an option to ignore soil.

I don't use any mods or farm soil and have 4 million of it.

I am on a planet that is 98.6 land. As I place my structures, soil is returned to me. Since I do not to place any soil to build, it is all a net gain. I can then use that soil elsewhere.

If you use mods, by all means, use Flexible Games's. If you don't like using mods, find a planet with little to no water/ acid and accrue it as you normally build.

Indeed, it is easily circumvented. Makes the process arbitrary when given the option.

Soil pile is completely a separate issue.

I have two full steel chests with foundation and making it super fast.

But soil pile is limiting what I can do, and it’s a stupid limitation

Yeah I ended up doing this.

It’s annoying that the mechanic is broken and dumb

i assume the reasoning behind soil was to limit space in the early game. i have no strong opinion on it because i always had enough.

it kinda helps the puzzle aspect of facotry builders which gets less and less pronounced once you get towers and organize production on a per planet basis. actually i think thats a weak point of DSP, the puzzle aspect gets less and less until its just completely gone.

it devolves into place tower, bunch of factories, rinse repeat ad nauseam. the only thing limiting at this point is the amount of clicks it takes to setup absurd factories. once there are blueprints this will only get even more evident. if you play this simply to live out your megalomanic side you might find that satisfying, its just not what i expect from such games.

But it solves the soil problem. If your making enough foundation you just spam foundation and get millions of soil.

That doesn’t work on the starter world which had lots of water.

Do you get soil by placing buildings on hills/mountains as well, as that also levels areas without having to place a bunch of additional foundation?

To solve the soil pile crisis, I went to a desert planet (there's usually one in the starter system)... then I paved around 50% of it... netted me around 15 million soil pile.
that was a 100 hours of gameplay ago and I haven't ran out yet.

and if I DO run out, I can just do it again with another gobi planet and have enough soil pile for another 100+ hours.

I use the mod FoundationToSoil, in the settings you can adjust how much soil you get for each foundation.
