Zoning and Labeling
I get very lost in my mess. my lovable mess. I want to be able to define an area then color and/or label it. i.e. where did I leave all that Sulfuric Acid?? if I could mark the acid area in a color then display it on the mini map it would be easy find. to extend that, a list of all my "zones" and ability to show/hide would help w/ organization. Along the same lines. when Icarus is flying around looking for stuff maybe I could put up big Map Pins that would stand out taller than everything else, and maybe has an icon that I can select and/or short text and/or color.

You can use coloured foundation to mark out zones.

People used to write words with belts with research cubes. They are visible very well even from space.

These first two comments are literally the only things I could recommend for this... Matrix cube belts are ridiculously bright.. I love it. and Colored Foundations are extremely visible from the planetary view... but not so much from the mini-map I'm afraid...

What really helped me is to build lines of wind turbines or solar panels along the inner "grid jump lines". You get a nice inner area that you can use for big layouts. The areas in pole direction for smaller layouts.

On a planetary scale, I use star/planet names to tell me what is there.

This is what I do. each band is colored. I start with light grey in the equatorial band, then light green and then other colors.

The innermost circle at the poles is about the same size as Nilaus does it in his videos. Except with the smallest circle at the poles I color one red and one blue.
(I don't have a north pole and a south pole. I call them red poles and blue poles.)

For lettering, I use a 5x7 dot matrix design that I got from one of my LED/LCD data display datasheets. They always have a chart in the back that shows all the letters and symbols.
Would be nice to have a mod do this. Manually placing single foundation tiles takes a while.
Also, these letters are easy to see from planet view.

I think there are some mods that do something like this. I haven't tried any of those yet.

i would enjoy better labeling via custom means as well

Labeling with science cubes is awesome, but can be tedious. A Google map marker makes more sense but loses the asthetic.
