You will need (or well it's highly recommended) to use/install the Thunderstore Modmanager first. But you can still install the mods manually.
I'm always surprised when a dev says they aren't adding it to basically any game that isn't a linear story driven game.
Im actually finding it hard to get into DSP after playing MP Factorio because it feels kind of stale and boring on my own.
Creating multiplayer for a game is NOT trivial, but is actually rather hard and time consuming.
.. and that's if you build your game from the start.
Implementing multiplayer into your already developed game is close to impossible to do right.
Your code have to be build in such a way that it allows for syncing and transmitting multiplayer messages from the start.
I have never done it myself, but i wouldn't be surpriced that it would take ½-1 year for a large studio to develop from scratch (must large studios uses the same engine for all their games tho), and for small indy delvelopers somewhere between 2-3 years depending on how complex your game is.
I think it's nice to see an indy developer that knows the limits of the game, and rather want to use the time to create a good game, than on multiplayer support, that they can't even garentee would be good.
try to look it up on google :) There is also some posts specifically about how factorio handles multiplayer (and btw, it took factorio about 6 years to get it right :) )
for example, there was a MP stress test where it dropped players when it reached 300 (i think, dont quote me). other devs would have said, "well 300 concurrent players is pretty decent isnt it, we just cap it there", but not factorio devs, they rewrote parts of the network stack and now you can play with 500 friends (whoever does that, i assume exactly noone).
now ofc its good that they really care about their game and it shows - the performance it stellar - but they sometimes often just overdid it and got lost in minute detail, thats the real reason it took them an eternity and a half to finally reach 1.0.
much like DSP, factorio was very playable and relatively bug-free from a pretty early version on, even in multiplayer.
still, i love factorio devs, their FFF taught me a lot about game development.
oh and to add something on-topic aswell:
sure multiplayer would be neat, but i have no issue that it isnt multiplayer either. i rather have a finished polished game, than a game stuck in development hell. i assume devs made a conscious decision against multiplayer when they started developing. i respect that.

i like how those that are more learned on the subject at hand, are the weirdos. if we are the weirdos what does that make the flat earther we had here not long ago?
