Best setting for running game in Background?
Hey,

anyone knows if it makes sense to disable fullscreen to let the game run in Background?

Normally fullscreen is the best option for better performance. But it's a bit annoying having the game still be on my screen all the time when I do something else.

Any tips/hints are welcome

Ubuntu lets you switch through multiple desktops via key combination. So any software that is set to fullscreen will still be treated as such even if on a different desktop.
With Win10 I have no hands on experience with the feature but it does exist:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/multiple-desktops-in-windows-10-36f52e38-5b4a-557b-2ff9-e1a60c976434
That might be worthwile to explore.

Just go into your settings and turn off fullscreen if you plan to run it in the background. then you'll be able to minimize it with no issues. I'm doing so right now and from what I can tell it didn't effect the game at all, GPU is still showing same statistics.

Alright, I will try out no fullscreen mode and if it does not help I will check that Ubuntu software out! Thank you guys!

Sorry, I should've been more precise. Ubuntu (which is a different operating system from Win10) has a multiple desktop feature. It lets you use up to 16 (or so) desktops on a single screen by cycling through them via hotkeys. A similar feature exists in Win10 but I never tried it (link above). Might be worth a try for you to see if it fits your needs. Though I too think you'll be fine just setting the game to windowed mode.

I tried window mode, sadly it doesn't decrease the performance needed, I was in hope running the game in Background may reduce the render effort and therefor GPU Usage, but that's not the case.

Maybe it's something that has to come from the game itself, so probably Ubuntu won't solve this, too?

Yeah, that won't work the way you want it to. I suppose mods or parking Icarus in an empty system could help. Maybe open some menu like the sphere editor and then switch the game into the background?

Yep something like that I guess, thanks :)

But I fear it still won't be enough to play Far Cry 5 on Ultra while DSP is running ^^

ha, trying to run any game while DSP is open is rich... i can't imagine either piece of software working properly or optimally. and that poor GPU will be tapped out in a couple hours.

Looks like that's the prive we have to pay for this beautiful looking game.

Letting Factorio run in Background was most the time fine, only if you went crazy big with a Megafactory, it was impossible to do anything else, too.

But well, Factorio is 99% polished, DSP is not, so let's see what further optimization in DSP will earn us additional fps!

yeah i do look forward to each patch and update, hoping GPU utilization gets optimized a bit more, even if minor.

Makes sense to leave the major optimizations until feature completion. Fingers crossed :)

Definitely... I also have that hope... I was talking to Regi yesterday about how bad my save is getting now that I'm over 2TW on the spheres... I'm almost at the point I'll have to start a new save just to enjoy the game because autosaving cannot be shut off and it has crashed my game more than once now. :( it also takes nearly a minute to complete when it does work...

I feel you. Though autosave can be turned off in settings->gameplay and then setting the autosave interval slider to the very left :)

The GPU usage issue in this game is NOT ONLY THE GRAPHICS. The game uses your GPU cuda cores to do the floating point calculations for the 42 million things happening in the cluster. It is much faster then your CPU for these calculations.

No amount of minimizing or desktop switching will change this. Only quitting the game will help.

You can create mutiple desktop with win+tab on windows 10. But i don't know if it's more efficient than running in background.
