SF6 is a good choice, I'd also personally recommend Guilty Gear -Strive- and the upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. Watch some gameplay videos, see if any given fighting game looks fun to you.
Mortal Kombat has it's jank dial a combo system and is just brutally ugly in the character department this iteration.
Tekken movement is like a bunch of wacky wave inflatable arm men trying to move forward by splits sliding.
For me it was an easy choice guilty gear seems pretty cool so I played some.
Your taste may differ. Maybe you like identical Gilfs and indistinguishable Asian men with unreleastic bone movements in which case mk is the easy pick. They all have their merits.
Anyway. There are free versions of 5 and 6 here, on Steam. Give it a try. See if you like them.
Due to some eVo ♥♥♥♥♥ we won't ever see a DoA game again, sadly.
Tekken 8 is fun. By yourself. Stay away from the online for it's cancer on steroids.
Also try Samurai Shodown, as well. If you have patience to read there's a VERY detailed review of mine.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is insane, too. Will surely go down in history as one of the grestest fighters ever made.
Cheers.
That said, if you like fighting games odds are you'll like lots of them. There's of course always Fightcade where you can mess around with all the retro ones. Other than that, if you're not sure, just wait out a big enough sale and try out one you like the look of on the cheap. (You'll probably have longer queues than in SF6 though, so try to rope a friend into buying a copy as well)

If on the other hand you want a 2D fighter that gives you 41 characters to mess around with for the base price, King of Fighters XV is on sale for $18 right now. Online opposition isn't good though, and anyone still playing that game is a murderer. SF6 skills only partially carry over to KoF, whereas Fatal Fury next year is more like a SF6 Remix with a little more technical stuff and slightly more speed.
That said, right now, it is definitely a time for 2D fighters to shine.
