The best fighting game is whatever one you have the most fun playing. Most fighting games these days are good enough to the point where which one is "the best" is strictly personal preference.

SF6 is a good choice, I'd also personally recommend Guilty Gear -Strive- and the upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. Watch some gameplay videos, see if any given fighting game looks fun to you.

Depends on what you like.

Mortal Kombat has it's jank dial a combo system and is just brutally ugly in the character department this iteration.

Tekken movement is like a bunch of wacky wave inflatable arm men trying to move forward by splits sliding.

For me it was an easy choice guilty gear seems pretty cool so I played some.

Your taste may differ. Maybe you like identical Gilfs and indistinguishable Asian men with unreleastic bone movements in which case mk is the easy pick. They all have their merits.

My favorite of the genre is Dead or Alive. And not because of all them hot asses and titties. 4 and 6 are the black sheep of the series, though. And for different reasons.

Anyway. There are free versions of 5 and 6 here, on Steam. Give it a try. See if you like them.

Due to some eVo ♥♥♥♥♥ we won't ever see a DoA game again, sadly.

Tekken 8 is fun. By yourself. Stay away from the online for it's cancer on steroids.

Also try Samurai Shodown, as well. If you have patience to read there's a VERY detailed review of mine.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is insane, too. Will surely go down in history as one of the grestest fighters ever made.

Cheers.

Virtua Fighter deserves to get back into waayyyy before DoA does.

That said, if you like fighting games odds are you'll like lots of them. There's of course always Fightcade where you can mess around with all the retro ones. Other than that, if you're not sure, just wait out a big enough sale and try out one you like the look of on the cheap. (You'll probably have longer queues than in SF6 though, so try to rope a friend into buying a copy as well)

Garou: Mark of the Wolves is on sale for a few dollars, if you wanna get a taste of the series before plunging into Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, when it's released.

Some more recommendations from me:

BlazBlue Central Fiction, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, Akatsuki Blitzkampf Ausf. Achse on Fightcade

Play the new (mod) version of Dong Dong Never Die. The game is super entertaining and it also has a very knowledgeable/talented person behind the mod update.

Ive heard Mk1 is pretty bad. My vote is Guilty gear, +R Strive and Xrd are all much much cheaper than Mk1 and tekken 8. I picked up strive for base price +R for like $8 and xrd for $10 or so. It is a different genre of FG though so you may prefer Mk1 as its prob the closest gameplay wise

If you're unfamiliar with 3D fighters, the free version of Dead or Alive 6 is a great way to find out whether that gameplay style is for you. There's also Soulcalibur VI, which is only $6 right now. But if you want human online opponents, you're unfortunately stuck with Tekken 8 in the 3D fighter sub-genre, with nothing else coming on the horizon.

If on the other hand you want a 2D fighter that gives you 41 characters to mess around with for the base price, King of Fighters XV is on sale for $18 right now. Online opposition isn't good though, and anyone still playing that game is a murderer. SF6 skills only partially carry over to KoF, whereas Fatal Fury next year is more like a SF6 Remix with a little more technical stuff and slightly more speed.

There's only Tekken, and Tekken is bad. 3d fighters are dead.

I wouldn't be surprised if a new Virtua Fighter, Soul Caliber 7 or DoA 7 are in the works... in fact I would bet a large sum of money we will see one (or more) of those franchises have a release in the next 3 years. EVO2024 has officially become the biggest Esports event in human history, and SF6, GGStrive, and T8 just made a ridiculous amount of money in the last couple years. Fighting games are experiencing a renaissance.

That said, right now, it is definitely a time for 2D fighters to shine.

As much as I dearly love Virtua Fighter I'd almost be worried about a VF6 at this point as we have no idea how many of the people that made VF5 great are still at Sega after almost twenty years. (At least VF still gets decent play time in Japanese arcades but Sega probably wants these games to get decent play time globally)
