It gets worse.
You're not actually getting a complete product anyway because there's still more content that will be added to the game even under a limited time offer. Most of the expenses are being used in Battle Hub that forces you to pay for exclusive limited time content you won't ever see again unless you've already obtained them.
It's either the base game or the actual definitive edition far into the future!
by definitive edition you mean the absolute full game will all characters released? but thats too far into the future right?
It's worded badly in order to fool buyers into thinking it has everything. The Year 2 character pass also has an Ultimate edition that includes new costumes and stages.
Just the base character pass 1&2 is all you need for the actual gameplay.
Also, find it cheaper here:

Since the game is still very young there's a long road ahead before any sort of definitive edition comes out, and even then may not actually have everything (SFV's didn't, for example).
So if you have interest in the game might as well get it now and get the extra characters later if you like it.
As Street Fighter IV and V, absolutely that's what I meant.
This especially applies to SFV because the base game had numerous missing features and was overtime updated with more content that you had to pay for. The "Championship Edition" is significantly more expensive than the original version because it's everything that should've been there anyway. I don't suggest to buy the Season Passes at the moment because they're expendable and won't be enough except being more expensive.
i bought mortal kombat 1 and regretted it because that game is horrible and charging money for every step you take.
i came here and saw its the same if not even worse, but at least this game is good.
That website compares store prices from all online stores, including steam. Merely organises it for you for convenience. The codes sold there show a small Steam icon indicating they can be redeemed on Steam even if you didn't buy it from Steam itself.
Personally, I like the game enough to be happy to continue supporting it, but if you're not in love with it then I always recommend trying the demo, then buying the base game if you like it ... and then decide what DLC you want from there. I've gotten all the characters, and I did buy a battle pass/fighting pass/whatever it's called since it pays for the next one if you complete it, but I don't forsee me putting any money into things like costumes. Maybe if I really really like one, but not yet.
Nearly all fighting games are made this way, so waiting for a hypothetical definitive edition (hypothetical because it doesn't always happen) means you're not playing the game during that time.
So basically, it all depends on which game you'd rather be playing right now instead of later.
Even if a game had a 40+ character roster at launch, and never added more people would be complaining it's stale within 6 months.
Is this your first time buying a fighting game, especially street fighter? product naming and actual meaning varies alot these day so I recommend reading the storepage description instead of insisting on the by-dictionary meaning.
ultimate edition of sf6 is meant to mainly bundle the 1st year characters pass with the base game for cheaper total price. characters pass for later years would have to be purchased separately.
Typical sf game ever since like sf3 would be actively supported for a more than 5 years including update/balancing and adding new characters, so in order to get the funding to do that they release character pass each year for players to purchase.
In case you want the full game which includes every characters it ever released, recent sf games since sf4 would get that kind of edition at the end of its lifecycle, which, as stated above, can be expected to come out after around 5 years from now.
I mean, also consider if SF6 were to launch with 40 characters we wouldn't be seeing the game until 2028-2029. And that's also another 3-4 years where Capcom would have to pay their staff without seeing any kind of ROI. The only way Capcom could've had a game with 40 characters ready in 2023 would've been by scrapping a lot of the other content that isn't just "the core fighting game" and dropping the graphics quality to roughly Dreamcast level.
I wouldn't be fine with the former since World Tour onboarded a lot of people, I personally would be fine with a much simpler graphic style but given how (for some bizarre reason) a lot of nerds have already made topics where they must say how upset they are at how ugly this game is, I don't think it would've worked wonders at retail, despite having twice the roster size of what we got.
