How to play with Mai Shiranui?
If I buy the game do I have to buy Mai as well or does they just release her for free?

In order to play Mai once she releases, you either have to buy her in game with fight coins, buy the Year 2 character Pass or Buy the Year 2 Ultimate Pass
Not free. Either purchase [year 2 character pass], or buy her in the game shop.

If bought using in-game shop; you'll have to buy 250 "fight coins" (2x) to unlock her. That's 10USD for 1 character!

I made an effort not so long ago to describe in detail cost of Mai and her costumes so I paste it below:

How much does each character cost?
That's difficult to exactly calculate due to having to use bullcrap premium currency. But it is as follows:

Individual new character on release costs 350Fighting Coins, premium currency that you have to buy and can't earn.

Those are sold in following packages:
250 Fighter Coins for $6.99.
610 Fighter Coins for $11.99.
1,250 Fighter Coins for $23.99.
2,750 Fighter Coins $49.99.

So you will have to overpay to get the character.

Buying characters like that through the shop grants you the character only with only outfit one and colours 1,2. Colours 3-10 for outfit1 can likely be bought with earnable currency, so I wouldn't worry about it - if you play regularly it won't take too long. Outfit two has to be unlocked by playing the singleplayer mode World Tour and maxing bond with that character, or you can unlock them in the shop for 50FC.

Before the summer outfits3 for Mai should be released with colours 1-10 and it will cost you 300FC on launch.

So to compare:
To just buy the character with outfit1 and two colours you will have to buy a minimum of $11.99 in FC.

Buying character pass y2 ($30) will give you Mai and outfit1 plus all the colours. [plus 3 other characters]. Outfit 3 still needs to be bought seperately on top of that when it releases if you want it.
Without the pass, to get the same content for just Mai you will have to spend $18.96 (610+250FC). With that you can buy the character (350FC), unlock outfit 2 (50FC), and outfit 3 when it releases (300FC). And have 160FC left over. You can also save 50FC on outfit2 and unlock it by playing. You will need to buy more FC to unlock colours for outfit 1, or unlock them by playing.

Ultimate pass y2 ($50) - will grant you Mai and outfits1, 2, 3 with all colours [plus 3 other characters and their respective content]. So nothing that $18.96 and a bit of grinding won't cover as far as Mai is concerned.

You can try the character, or at least her fighting style, for free in World Tour when she's released.

Well, her moves and not all at once.

There are also rental tickets that allow to rent a character for an hour, though no clue how I got them or how one could earn more.

That said OP seems clearly interested in getting the game to play Mao, so I don’t think trials like that are for him.
Rental tickets used to be in the first two levels of the free track of battle passes, nowadays they are handed out more sporadically now that Capcom realised anyone that bought the game within four months of launch was sitting on a full stack of ten rental tickets.

no, you can't. You can not even have the same input on many moves as on the original character and often times have different moves be covered with the same input.

You forgot that the Character pass and the ultimated pass include the other 3 characters. So IMO is the best deal to buy any of the 2.

Dude I can't wait for Mao to come out, he looks so fun. His level 3, Establish the CCP, looks so cool. Can't wait to grind Ranked and earn social credit score with him.
