So what causes lag spikes when a usb is connected/disconnected?

I was playing some games and randomly i heard my usb disconnect noise and then reconnect... (Not sure what even did this) and it caused the game to hard spike. Is there a way to stop this from happening? Why would the game react in such a way that the whole game gets messed up from a usb.
