Because he's supposed to be the new poster child of the franchise, how high the cover character is on the tier lists isn't really relevant.

But why make the poster boy trash? He has to get perfect knuckles just to measure up to Ken pressing buttons like a monkey.

As a Luke main throughout season 1 I ask myself this quite a lot, it feels like they butchered my boy. I get the damage nerfs but they didn't have to make his frames ass too, it just feels excessive. But this seems to be the trend with Capcom; make a Ryu replacement then forget about them.

I believe they think he is able to speak to the new generation, the youngest of us.
Fans like me since SF2 will buy it anyway, I know there's ken, ryu, guile etc... in it.

I think it's more the fact that having Luke be one of the strongest characters, if not the strongest in the game by a considerable margin had more to do with them nerfing him (and only SLIGHTLY) than them "forgetting" about Luke.

slightly? Luke is fun to play still, but playing Akuma or Ken after playing Luke just feels like straight cheating

Because Capcom is tryhard to switch Luke for Ryu as someone important. People still play him and someone like ED mostly because they are strong not because they like the character. Nerf them to ground and see how many will stick.

Ryu on the other hand, was strong, weak, mid. Still the most complete SF character in the world (wonder will anyone see the referrence...).

There are hundreds of thousands of Street Fighter players that don't even know what a tier list is. And hell, I know what a tier list is and I always pick my main based on vibes because I also know I'm nowhere near good enough to be part of the player pool where a tier list even matters.

That said, Ed and Luke both are top 10 picks in the three lowest ranks so I think it's safe to say a decent number of folks just like their designs as those are the least informed players.

Capcom keep trying and no one is buying it. They tried it with Guile, Sean, Charlie and Alex, Rashid and now Luke. Capcom, just give up. Embrace that Ryu is forever the poster boy when people think of SF.
