My thumb did hurt so much at release that I bought an arcade stick, that I can also use for all the beat em all I have and arcade shooters.
I wouldn't recommend a controller, but there are many many people who are happy with them.
I went from stick to leverless, but prior to actually forking over the money to buy a leverless I played on keyboard to test out if I would like the control style as it's pretty much the same damn thing, it's just leverless controllers have bigger buttons.
Keyboard is basically just a leverless with smaller and extraneous buttons and work just fine as long as you bind it right.
Some controllers are a bit arse in terms of d-pad etc, but for casual gaming the majority of them are perfectly fine for the purpose.
It's about what you're comfortable with and once you find it you stick with it.
The thing about switching controllers is adapting to the new one will take work.
I do wanna try out a leverless stick at some point to see how that feels but that's just me.
You should experiment and see what feels good for you.
