Your logic could be applied to any games genre or hobbies really, people just have different tastes, that's why you can't ever please everyone.
That is before world tour exists in fighting games.
I invested heavily into Tekken 7 last gen because SFV bombed. Based on what I have seen from Tekken 8 about their new additions, I'm not impressed with T8 so far and I'm probably going to invest heavily into SF6 this gen.
I have got more value out of the former than any other game I've bought since 2016, and it doesn't even have really anything to do other than play online.
Fighting games are more like chess than a pure entertainment video game genre. it's about practising and reflexes and dexterity, getting better and character mastery. No other video game genre offers this, to this level, no other genre allows such character expression that can vary wildly from player to player.
and then you have the pure psychological part of defeating an opponent and mind games. Also Sf6 tournament is 1 million dollars first prize this year, if you want to be that sweaty you can...
SF6 is a decent package that it caters to the core market while giving casual people stuff to do, but ultimately if you are not into these other aspects fighting games are probably not for you.
Even in the Gaming community fighting games remain a very misunderstood thing.
There's also a large competitive audience that play the game a lot. So if you're playing the game all the time, the large purchase price up front is better than paying every time you want to play.
They really need to come up with some genius level subscriptions, memberships, loyalty or bulk deals for arcades. Use the gym membership traps, bundle in some crunchyroll or hulu, put a KFC in the arcade, whatever ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ works. The goal should be pennies per game for the customer, but a solid enough structure to bankroll the arcade. It's 2023 where are all the millennial B.B.A.s in Japan? they should be trying to save the damn industry
