Also are you on modern or classic?
Doesn't matter. Modern still charges.
Chun-Li is a very execution heavy character. Honestly, she's hard AF. I've been breaking my wrists on a Hitbox trying to get her damn stance combos out.
I'd say use her until you find Ken or go back to Luke's playstyle. Chun-Li is not a good option for new players.
So, it's a charge. I don't play Modern Controls so I don't know what you're talking about. Are you talking about her fireball?
To play Chun-Li, there's a concept called "ABC" or "Always Be Charging." That means to hold down+back all the time so you can have both a fireball and a Spinning Bird Kick chambered and ready to come out. Even when you jump, you immediately need to press down+back because her combos require those moves which are charged.
There's one exception. That's if she goes into stance. And this is where it gets complicated. I don't know what Modern Controls do for Chun, but just know she's hard af.
But about 6 months ago, I started learning Charging for the first time myself!!! So, don't feel like you're alone. I learned it just for this game!!! And I picked Chun-Li in SFV to try to get used to it. And now, I can't go back. She's my homie.
But there are a lot of people who don't really care about her that much. For all of those people, it's not worth learning. So, unless you're just really good at fighting games or love Chun-Li, it's probably not worth learning RIGHT NOW.
Basically, i said all of that to say, it's not you. You're not the problem. Trust me. The ♥♥♥♥♥ is hard to play.
Trust me. It's not you that's the problem. Don't feel dumb. Charging blew my mind when I first saw it. I couldn't believe it was an actual thing. It almost made me not want to play Street Fighter ever. It took a long time to adjust to it.
So for now, you might not fully understand charging, but YOU WILL. One day when you get time in, you'll come back with a better understanding of the overall gameplay. And it'll be easier to deal with. Because right now, you have so much to learn and it's all overwhelming. So, adding charging on day 1 is kinda bad.
That's my LOW RANKED opinion. I'm bad at the game too! So, welcome to the club!!! But maybe you'll get out of it faster than me! Probably!
Oh for sure. I mean, you're basically going to be playing all playstyles since you can switch them on the fly. The good news is that the game saves your clothes and special moves for each playstyle. So you don't have to set it up each time. You can just switch back and forth.
Have fun! Chun has some amazing dialog for when you get her Bond higher.
