I need the people in this thread to come into my thread ASAP. Got some braindead people saying these grabs and combos ARENT broken. Marisa, and JP for me are a problem.
The reason why JP is an issue is there was no thought to game balance with him at all because he's the current "boss character", he was designed to be the big bad of the current game where he was pretty much good at everything, had an answer to everything, and a lot of normal game mechanics and tactics were negated. It's pretty typical when it comes to fighting games actually, where the final boss is pretty much not relevant to anything else in the game. In most cases they cut down the playable version if they are indeed playable and balance it by making it so a lot of the cooler stuff basically can't be done by a player the same way the AI does it to cheeze you.
This tradition goes back to arcade machines where the whole idea was that someone who got to the final round would keep popping in quarters "because I got this far and want to see the ending cinematic" so they made it as painful as possible, and oftentimes like playing a slot machine, so the machines could make money. Some series were more infamous for this than others, and let's just say home versions of games using this logic that limited continues could have a certain reputation as you could wind up in a situation where it's a question if the RNG is going to let you clear since typically the AI has an answer to everything that will override everything and it's all about whether it will use this at any given time.
You can sort of see this in the way JP is used in the story mode where many people have gotten very upset over how the final battle works and it seems to be an excuse to extend things by forcing the PCs to lose, and then re-grind for items to even have a chance of trying again. It's just like the quarter munching, and a lot of what happens there can be done to a great extent by players using the character. I have less problems with a "traditional" fighting game end boss than some of this might infer, but anything like this should not be playable on the same level, or at least not in multi-player or competitive play.
As JP is intentionally unbalanced and doesn't even try to be, as I said, he should be locked out, especially in any kind of ranked play.
JP is managable, git gud!
To OP:
Dhalsim and Blanka
I'm not kidding when I'm saying I've seen one Sim in my entire climb from silver to Diamond. One. And he was terrible.
JP is, as a JP main, the fattest knowledge check in the game. Once you know his gimmicks it's fine.
Blanka isn't too crazy either, though I always get caught by Blanka ball whiffs into grab. His H Blanka ball can be anti-aired cleanly by a few characters so it's a non issue.
Gief is Gief. He struggles until he's in your face. That damage is punishment for letting him get there.
Fact is JP and Zangief require different strategies to beat than your average match.
And honestly i welcome the variety.
I feel targeted here. I quickly learned that when Blanka's balls are slapping people in the face left and right, they tend not to have a decent response. I suppose the thing to do is keep it up. I'll ride Blanka's balls as far as they'll take me.
