Modern Controls as a Beginner
Hey guys, i know there are many "is this beginner friendly" threads, but theres no answer for my specific question.

first of all - i suck in fighting games. i really suck.
but i got no problems with it, you can beat me and i hope, i can improve with it.
so this doesnt drops the interest in the game for me.

the one and only downfall for me is, that i cant improve with the controls. thats my concern.

after readind some reviews, i read that the game has "modern controls".
so my question is:
is it possible, for a stupid dumb like i am in fighting games, to play this game online and just have fun with it ?
i dont want to sit 100 hours in front of a paper and study combos.
just wanna jump in and learn by progress. is that possible with the MC ?

Modern Controls simplify the learning curve that fighting games have for beginners. Easy to get into. Unfortunately, you will lose on some of the characters moveset and have 20% Damage Reductions on all your attacks because of how easy it is to combo with. If you just wanna have fun though, its still a good way to get started with the game and learn from there.

Yeah, that's the entire point of Modern controls. It bypasses the "execution barrier" at a slight cost of damage and limited moveset and lets players just get into the game and actually experience it. Both control methods are equally viable too and it's all up to personal preference.

First of all, thanks for the answers. But i didnt understand one thing.
"have 20% Damage Reductions"

When i play online games, i make less dmg against my opponent ?

Yes. I'm in the same boat and I've enjoyed playing with modern controls. There are still combos to memorize with modern controls, but it's not nearly as daunting as classic and allows you to focus on the many other aspects of the game.

I also recommend playing ranked, as it does a pretty good job at matching you with players of similar skill level. You'll get stomped way more often in casual matchmaking or the battle hub.

Learning combos is going to be the same with modern or classic, the two methods have different motion controls. Modern does have a few simple assist combos that's it.

Learning combos doesn't learn game sense, I believe many people don't realize this.

Yes, and play ranked. You'll get matched eventually with people closer to your skill level.

Supers, specials, and automatic combos will do less damage. Normal attacks and manual specials and combos will still do regular damage. It's meant to balance the game, and it's not that big of a deal. You'll still be able to win against players using classic controls, and you'll be on even ground with another modern control user.

Don't worry, i play for fun too with MC (Modern Controls), It's my first Street Figther and it's a Blast, Like you i don't wanna sit 100h in training grounds, just to play instantly.
Modern controls is good when you are Casual/New player, the only downside i think it's at high level it's getting more harder for MC. (Only Fighting game i play at a ''Mid/Good Level'' is Smash Ultimate).

Also 20% Damage reduction & 3 moves in modern controls we don't have compared to Classic.

Don't forget that the same rules apply to everyone Modern/Classic, to have a good neutral and aquiring the base, modern controls is just easier controls, but the rest depends of you.

I'm no expert in fighting games, but I've played about a dozen fighting games before, dabbled in vs. mode, and played a ton of SF6 in the short time since it came out. And been chatting and reading about it here in the forums. And sadly there is no game mode, not even the bottom of ranked, where you can play with other newbies. All the experienced people say that the only way to learn is to practice against the bot in the arena. Which is, well, as far away from newbie-friendliness as can be.

Anyone is free to correct me here but, as far as I understand if you want to get better, you *have* to keep training in practice arena over and over and over. Many people say it's months, some say it's years. All I know is I've spent some 10h there with all the tutorials etc. and it has made no difference, I'm getting destroyed all the same.

So I guess either you get used to losing almost every match until it becomes old and you move on to another game (I'm pretty close to that point tbh), or you really do just play single player against a dummy and spend your free time you should be gaming and having fun, to study dissertations and theory just so you can one day after many months start having balanced casual matches. I know this seems like I have an attitude going on but, it really does seem like this.

And I don't play games to hit a practice dummy solo for weeks or months and study combo and frame data homework for hours every day. I just don't. I will never do that. That's something professional competitive gamers should do, not casuals. I play games to have fun. So if I don't get balanced matches in vs. mode, I'll just play what's left of the single player mode, uninstall, and move on. :>

Try ranked match, i've seen far more Casual/New player after placements, it's become more balanced. Battle Hub/Casual is More Mixed.

Fighting games are more fun if you stop comparing yourself to others. All that matters is that you learn new things at your own pace.
Castyles Jun 8, 2023 @ 5:07pm
If there's a proper matchmaking system always go ranked, when starting out. Then when you start facing the tryhard sweats that are way out of your league just bail and play casual.

Besides, there are lots of stuff to do outside the online mode. World Tour, Story and plenty of options against the CPU.

From what I'm reading, it seems there's a player ranked on the top 100 that uses modern controls, btw. So you're probably fine.

Yes, you can have fun with this game. It's probably the most accessible SF game to date (with all its controls).

However, controls aren't really going to make you good or get better (obviously), there's a lot of situational awareness and knowledge checks that make the game complex and fun at higher levels.

Modern controls will raise everyone's base skill level by eliminating some of the more technical aspects of the game, but eventually, people are going to know the ins-and-outs of this game and if you keep on playing like it's bronze, you're going to get destroyed by someone who has put in the time to study the game.
