Then they all broke down so I just figured some way to make my ps3 controllers work on pc and life is good. (Actually it keeps disconnecting but I think that's more a port issue)
At the end of the day the controller does not make the player, use whatever is most enjoyable/comfortable/practical to you.
Maybe in the year 30xx execution levels will be so high everyone will play on a hitbox to be able to get two moves two frames faster but I somehow doubt it.
If you look at this diagram you will see that the square gate gives you the most equal access to every direction, where circle gates (which is what you have on a video game controller) make it nearly twice as hard to hit a diagonal.

That said, if you're willing to give some time to adapt to it, I'd recommend a leverless controller. It's a joy to play.

I find analog way more pleasant to use for inputs even tho moves that invovle dashes are pain in a butt to perform. Before adjustment, I had issue doing crouching medium into Drive Rush, and moves like Tensho kick are very difficult to do on reaction.
Am considering switching to a six button controller, like the M30, a keyboard or a hitbox.
I chose Chun li as well ! Yeah dashes are really hard on an analog stick. Anything with twice the same direction is still hard to perform with consistency for me, but i'm getting better. On the other side, quarter circle are quite easy to do. I'm starting to get the middle kick cancel to hundred lightning kick !
I have a custom-made hitbox from Furin Arcade. I'm enjoying FGs more than I ever have in my whole life (and I need to do so now, I'm 41 and for all I know I won't be able to play them comfortably for much longer). SF6, SamSho, KOFXV, Tekken 7, all feel amazing on it. Before that I used keyboard for SF6 and I did enjoy that. But with hitbox I can now play comfortably at my desktop or at my living room PC.
I also have a Victrix Procon BFG, which is the most comfortable pad I've ever used for FGs. The back buttons take a bit of getting used to, but give you instant access to e.g. Drive Rush and Drive Parry (whatever you customise it as). And the controller comes as standard with a fightpad button replacement, which is extremely easy to swap out. I got it on sale for £120, the regular price of £180 is definitely too much.
Yeah, double taps on the stick done quickly really fatigue my thumb (and hand in general). Leverless has improved that hugely, I can play for longer.
Have you tried setting those to e.g. L1 and L2?
Tried to make L1 and L2 into Drive Parry and Drive impact, and 3xP and 3xK into R1 and R2, but sometimes I get light buttons instead of EX moves.
I use mostly the analog stick because, it feels good and I have no problems doing the specials that way, it took some practice to get the feel but now I rarely mess up the inputs and have no issue hitting down left/right or whatever. I visualize it by thinking straight=aim towards the enemy or away. down left/right aim towards the floor in front or behind the char. When my brain does that my thumb get it´s right.
drive rush I use the d-pad though because trying to double tap on stick sucks. so well yeah for some moves I quickly scoot my thumb to the d-pad. But by the way the game works in sort of "turns/rock paper scissor" as of yet this has not been an issue. (maybe at high level gameplay idk)
I´m silver something at this point, and it´s rarely messing up the inputs that makes me loose a match. I just don´t know what to do against people who are better than me.
sorry for wall of text.
(edit, why does your thumb wear out from pushing two buttons? do you tense it or move it in some way perhaps,? for me it feels the same as pushing one button, just a different position on the pad, the motion is the same)
Your wall of text was not a problem, no worries.
I'm in Bronze or Silver on multiple characters. The advice that helped me was: have a BnB (e.g. midscreen low resource cost) combo, have a combo to cash out your driver bar and super meter to secure a kill, and have a big punish combo.
Also, get used to the player archetypes you fight. You know, the jump away Ryu, the dragonlash Ken, the jump in to throw Cammy, the react to jump in with DI Juri. If you learn how to adapt to these faster and faster, you win more and more.
Finally, make friends with other people around your rank and play some custom room games together. Really work out your weaknesses and strengths, and how to improve them and use them.
thank you, I never thought about structuring it like that. yes I should look into some better combos to cash in and do more damage when I get a hit (among other things)
sometimes I have a match and start of by hitting a lot of pokes or just tossed out specials and throws but I don´t manage to capitalize on it and realize I´ve barely scratched their bar.
well then there´s the people who just put so much pressure on me and have an answer for anything I do I can´t even move without getting punished, can´t stand still without getting punished.can´t block without getting punished.
it´s cool to watch them though. I can appreciate their skill.
