It's not "fantastic" at all. At most I'd say it's adequate.
Cramped Button layout. unergonomic finger placement for a fighting game. Hitting multiple vertical buttons with one finger isn't very comfortable because of the raised buttons and using the index finger + thumb method isn't comfortable either because of cramped and small the buttons are. Try double tapping medium punch with the finger slide method. Yeah not very effective because END is in the way.
Using the Insert-Del rows does remove the distraction of other buttons however you lose access to space with one thumb. Having jump available to two thumbs makes some execution very simple for example SPD is Piano F,D,B and then up + punch with the other hand. That's a really nice way to input certain things.
Keyboard is an adequate way to get a feel for a hitbox, but it's nowhere close as nice as a proper hitbox. It's a good way to practice and get your mind around the idea how leverless works, but has some shortcomings too.
Hori Fight Commander Is great I'm still using mine, but it's discontinued so you can't get a new one. The next gen version of that controller is out and it's less ergonomic and the D-Pad I hear is worse. It does have an analog stick with an octagonal gate for some reason.
I'm thinking of replacing my fight commander though since the worn out d-pad is becoming a bit problematic for me.
How's the victrix pro?
I've gotten used to it but recently purchased a fightbox and will be making the switch. Honestly save yoruself a lot of money and time and get something else.
I'm contemplating a switch to a hitbox too, but I'm still probably going to get the next gen hori fightpad in the meanwhile, it's not that expensive anyway. Paying $180 for a pad means the pad better be top notch in every way. So thanks for the warning.
The buttons feel great to push since they are micro-switched and I really appreciate the large shoulder buttons which are great for my large hands. I will say if you're playing on PC, I suggest spending the extra $10 for the PS4/5 version since you can use the touchpad to emulate a right-stick for camera control via Steam Input . Beats holding down R1 and then using the face buttons to control the camera.
- I've played for a while with a Xbox 360 pad but sometimes I accidentally do the left-up input instead of left due to the round dpad shape.
- The dpad on the PS4 Dual Shock controller gives a better indication of the thumb position on the dpad but sadly mine doesn't work with steam
- I'm currently using the Hori Fighting Commander and the dpad is okay, but the whole thing just feels like very cheap plastic. The buttons are very mushy and my light kick button gets stuck from time to time. Doing light combos is an absolute nightmare with this pad.
x360 controller is probably better for general use on PC because of better compatibility.
