In the Equip Appearance option, you can equip items that masks/hide the appearance of the gear that boost the stats of your Avatar.
You just need to find them by either farming them through the regular NPCs, and meet their conditions or through the SiRN chests.
Yes, you can hide accessories. You equip the accessories with good stats, but then actually visibly show the accessories you like the appearance of. That's why there's two sets of items for equipping (the second is for visible appearance only). If there's equipment set in that first list, not the second, you use that equipment for both stats AND appearance.
Play until you get good accessories you want to see.
