How to counter Ken and Ryu corner pressure in Gold rank?
They always defeat me the same way. By cornering me and then repeating strings that, to me, seem to be almost impossible to break away from.

If anyone found a good video that covers Ken's and Ryu's weaknesses, I'd be grateful.

Juri is my main atm. Been trying out Dhalsim as well (I'm guessing his approach to the matchup is very different), but it'll be likely be a looong time before I'm confident enough to play online matches with him, so that shouldn't be an issue for a while.

There is no magic weakness. If you are in the corner you are in the rock paper scissors mind game, and there is no way out but guess right. As it should be.
If that is an issue id focus on not getting cornered. maybe hit confirming better, or taking corner carry combos to better your screen position vs damage

in gold people arent consistent enough to push you to the corner without letting you escape (I'm plat atm and this is still true for most) you need to contest them when they try to walk you down or sideswitch via crossup or back throw (with juri drive rush back throw works well)
Also what the other guy said, EX DP their strings from time to time, if nothing else it will make them pause inbetween

I suck at hit confirming, yes. My reactions aren't fast enough to make decisions based on whether my attack lands or gets blocked. But I'll try to practise it some more, you're right.

Have you tried using her OD tensenrin as a reversal? On gold rank it seems to work quite well
I do this from time to time, but probably not nearly as much as I should, that's true.

This is another thing that I'm underutilising and will try to use a bit more.

Alright guys, I've got a few things to focus on, I'll try them out during the next few days and see if I get better, thanks a lot.

Also I'm changing the title of this post to something less salty.

Aside from battle tactics, there is also such a thing as 'battle fatigue.' This idea is that there exists an ideal mental space for winning called 'the zone.'

Sometimes, you need to allow yourself to be in 'the zone' to read your opponent better. Ways to reach 'the zone' vary, but it's about being relaxed, present, and focused on the game.

Try not to play while tired, or stressed. Optimal mental and physical states do exist, so try to be in those spaces while playing.

Yea this game can get frustrating for me way too easily. I've been trying to be more chilled out while playing lately and I think I'm making progress. Sometimes I watch Aris play SF6 and I always admire how non-chalant he is about losing even to the most annoying opponents. Hoping to reach that level sometime.

Don't focus on winning the match. Focus on this interaction right now: can you see what the enemy is doing? Can you find the part of the blockstring where you can jab out of it? Can you predict their grabs and throw, or predict their shimmies and get a combo?

You don't win games, You win the interactions in the games, and if you win enough of those you'll win overall.

There's a game within the game, and it seems like yours is how to get out of corner pressure.

One of the things that all good fighting game players profess to needing is pattern recognition. For top level players they're always looking for patterns they can abuse or need to keep in mind.

If you're getting stuck in the corner, watch the blockstrings they use. Pay attention and don't worry about fighting out. Be in the moment and watch for patterns and just block. Fighting game players are creatures of habit, and go by the saying that "if it works, keep doing it". What's probably happening is they are getting you with the same thing, as you're probably trying to stop something without understanding how it's hitting you. Just watch, keep your fingers on the throw tech button and watch for the red flash. It's a lot, and you'll honestly get hit with it for a few rounds, but until you start to try and keep mental notes about patterns, you're going to keep getting it. Once you see the string, you can start to see where there's an opening. There's always an opening, but most of the time, when you're cornered, you panic and hit the DI button or spam throw tech. Sometimes the best solution is to sit, block, gather data and take a few throws.

Think of it this way you're playing the long game and gathering player data on combos and strategies that a character can use, and you're building a mental reference guide with each loss.

This is why I prefer casual matches, as it's going to take a lot more than a best of 3 to learn matchups.

Some good advice in this thread. Whatever you do, don't wake up DI..

i notice alto of new people like to start walking backwards as sooon as the round starts, specially with juri, they walk or jump backwards allready pretty much putting themselves in corner. and they wonder why they cant rank up. but anyway, ur not doign that are you? also would help if u can post video

Try using Drive Reversal too sometimes. I think Ken and Juri have nastier blockstrings than Ryu.
Nocturno Jul 1, 2023 @ 7:58pm
First step is to keep your cool and don't mash. Use invincible wheel kick occasionally. Don't over rely on it or you'll become predictable.

So kens love abusing his walk speed for shimmys, take advantage of that and wait for them to walk forward for the throw and jab check em and blow them up.
Also Drive impact the holy hell outta them and make them hate this game.
I hate that stupid character. :steamsalty:

Ryu pretty honest so idk. I don't have to much trouble with him unless I make bad decisions.
Credentials: Diamond 2 juri main.

The other posters gave some pretty sound tips so i'm sure something will work out for you.
