Best learning path to becoming competitive?
I've been playing fighters since their creation and I've always been a button mashing noob getting his butt kicked.
Do I start with modern controls and get comfortable, eventually working my way to classic controls, or do I learn some other way?
I bought the book, "Gief's Gym - 3rd edition" I really want to learn to be competitive in this game!

P.S.
If this info helps any, I have a custom arcade machine using EG Starts joystick+button kit (you can find them on Amazon). 8 buttons + Coin & Start.

Just go for classic. Better frustrate on fresh start at the beginning rather than getting frustrate on half way when trying shift from modern muscle memory.

for starter this advice from Justin Wong is really good

Happy to see that I'm not the only one struggling. Went into the battle hub and got my ass whooped like 20 times. It made me feel like I was a lil kid in the arcade again going up against the big kids who already knew how to do all the special moves. Either way, I'm definitely reading up on all of your advice, guys.
if you're completely new never touched a fighting game before

either move up arcade mode from CPU 1 to 7
or match up with a friend and learn w/ each other, that's the best way

if u hit online day 1 u'r gonna get demolished and demoralized
learn basics first, spacing, footsies, controlling the middle

then things more specific to this game: Frame kill, oki (on defense and offense), blockstrings.

The training mode actually has good tutorials for these things, i believe

I would watch people who make character guides as well, watching top players can help as well.

This game has a feature where after a ranked match you can go straight into training mode against the character you just fought and you can set the dummy up to lab out certain situations you have trouble with. :SF6_Jungle_Sprite:

1 - Practice

2 - slowly build your fundamentals. put aside winning and focus on achieving small goals until they become automatic then add in another thing to focus on.
examples;
- focus on anti airs during a match until you do them without thinking.
- focus on spacing yourself properly to make your opponent miss pokes that you can whiff punish and counter.
- focus on getting a feel on when people want to throw and teching them.
ect ect.

3 - when you have issues against something a player / character is doing take it to training mode and work out the solution. you'll remember it better when you do it yourself.

4 - learn from your losses - actively analyse why you lost, what your opponent did, what you did wrong, and learn from it. this is helpful when you keep losing to a particular character but cant work out whats going wrong in the heat of the match.

5 - play multiple characters, its a good way to learn and remember what situations different characters are strong and weak at.

6 - more knowledge. learn the more advanced things like, drive rush / burnout frame advantage and what you can and cant do, how a frame trap works, how wake up pressure / meaty attacks work works, safe jumps, how option selects work, converting into combos off of counter hits, the mental game of conditioning your opponent ect ect.

7 - Practice

8 - execution. this gets too much emphasis on importance to get good. your execution will mean nothing if you don't have the awareness and fundamental skills to get the opponent in a situation where you can actually combo them in the first place.
its nice to have a combo or 2 that you are confident with but start small and simple. the rest will come over time while learning everything else.

starting with modern to learn the game first is also a good option and why it was created.
Thank you, noted.

Yep, I watched this the other day, it got me interested in even trying. It's the moment I bought SF6.

I noticed that feature. Have been doing some training that way.

Also join a street fighter and a fighting game discord. Look for resources there. Ask people for help in chat rooms. You will also find people who are willing to play sessions with you and help you improve. That's honestly one of the best ways these days to get better.

for me the most helpful thing is watching top level players to learn from.
not only do you learn smart play by watching matches, but watching how they train and approach learning the game on their twitch streams can be very enlightening.

punk, fchamp, snake eyez, and justin wong are all amazing players with different strategies for learning the game, and they all stream regularly on twitch.

also redbull kumite is happening right now on their channel, it probably has the highest level players of any sf6 event so far.

Dragon punch, also I still don't get it... What do you mean by 3? Like the netcode? Is the netcode 3?

Number pad.
789
456
123
End the dp motion at 3. When I started out with SF5 I was ending my motion at 6 thanks to lenient inputs. Which meant I accidentally used critical arts constantly.
I think the reason why people end it at 6 is because on a controller, it just seems more easier. The lenient inputs started at SF4. When I played Super Turbo, it was extremely strict.

I see. Was just practicing that a minute ago. my "DP"s are so inconsistent.

I actually started playing on a fight stick since I had one leftover from Blazblue, which I had played over a decade ago lol.
I switched over to a fight stick awhile ago. It felt easier doing special moves, especially Z motions or any crazy ass pretzel motions. It also helped with muscle memory since using a fight stick felt more "involved", making me remember certain combos even after years.

I switched over to fight stick when I started sfv. I actually played BlazBlue on pad even after having bought said stick at the time, but I agree. Stick feels like what the games are meant to be played on. Suppose that's because they are.
Reminds me of FPS games. I can play it on a controller but it feels much better with a keyboard and mouse.
