Animaze has better control over avatar positioning too, and does more with head position tracking than Facerig ever did
It might just be a matter of getting accustomed to the new controls (or using the key remapper to map it to keys that you are accustomed to).

Facerig never stopped working - not sure why you would think that, given how many people use it every day. Please email info[@]facerig[.]com for support on that, maybe there is some recent change to your set-up that has caused FaceRig to misbehave. Surely it is fixable.
FaceRig never had a free version, anyone wanting to use it, streamer or non streamer had to pay its cost up-front to be able to use it.
By comparison, it costs nothing to get started with Animaze (all payments are optional after you decide if they are worth it).
Comparing the feature set of the paid version of Facerig with the free feature set of Animaze (which is more casual) is not really a fair side-by-side. If you want to compare in detail, it is best to do so for both paid versions.
The Free version of Animaze is meant mostly for people using it casually to attend a class or join a call with friends and family (typically lasting less than 90 minutes), and the paid version of Animaze (and its more advanced feature set for streamers ) has no Vcam session time limit.
Animaze overall takes less money from casual/occasional use than Faceig did (and long-term Animaze does indeed have the optional subscription from streaming power users, starting at 20 USD per year - but it does aim to provide comensurately better features in return).
Software development is expensive and supporting the ongoing development of the platform requires some form of ongoing revenue, so artists and programmers can continue to work on it.
20 USD per year optional sub nets out to ~1.7 dollars per month for power users. it is REALLY affordable. By comparison, a Twitch channel subscription costs five dollars per month.
If you compare paid Animaze and paid FaceRig I trust you will see Animaze pulling up ahead in most key aspects by now, (and in ALL key aspects by the time the Animaze Early Access is completed). The goal is for Animaze to provide you with more value per dollar spent than FaceRig ever did :).
FaceRig is not down (there is something specific happening on your machine and it is likely fixable with help form David from support).
On calibration: for optimal tracking the web camera needs to see your face head-on (your webcam needs to be on the top of the monitor that you are facing, not to the left or right)

For facerig we were allowing sub-optimal set-ups because the expectations for tracking accuracy were lower in 2014-2015.
For Animaze we have decided to insist on proper web-camera placement and calibration/set-up because to properly track asymmetric expressions the camera needs to be able to see both halves of your face. It cannot do that if it is placed to the left or to the right.
People expect in 2021 asymmetric expressions to work correctly.
Animaze is a new effort, separated from the old FaceRig (FaceRig is now a 7-year-old software suite - and it continues to work).
Animaze is built in recent years on a different new engine, supported by a different new toolset, on a different paradigm.
We have simply ported some of the fan-favorite avatars over from FaceRig due to popular demand, but that's where the work overlap between the two avatar software suites ends.
You can think of them in terms of gaming like "Oblivion" and "Elder Scrolls Online" - they may share some characters and they do target a similar audience, you fight Daedra in both of them, but ESO is not a "renamed Oblivion". They are different products, built on different engines, launched many years apart.
Facerig owners who chose to hop over to the new software do have advantages/bonuses on the Animaze platform (free avatars and discounts for the initial subscription cycles). In addition to that, they can also in parallel continue using the FaceRig software if they so choose. (Facerig continues to work as it did and exists separated from Animaze).
