I really really liked Demon Gaze's hunt the boss mechanic though. It was a kind of way of randomizing a major part of the dungeons without losing the hand-made aspect of it.
The games are less about special battle performance, and more about equip and grind, traditionally speaking. And running away if necessary. Demon Gaze is fairly friendly, but if you ever touch something like Elminage Original or whatever, you'll quickly realize what I mean. I personally really prefer Experience stuff though, as their area design are so much better. Maybe it's acquired taste, but Demon Gaze made me really start to embrace D-Rpgs, though mostly thanks to the really neat dungeon designs and exploration. Operation Babel is also really good with that, that game has some REALLY great dungeons that I loved way too much.
"but by the end the combat kinda became samey" perfectly describes every dungeon crawler ever. No idea why would anyone expect anything different.
Still, a guy can dream right?
