WotL unharmed challenge on Gnarly
Figured I’d split it off into a separate thread, but lmk if there’s a better one to check out

Playing on Switch, story mode Gnarly difficulty, got 47/48 stage challenges completed, except stage 16’s unharmed

Dude this is WAY way harder than the other three unharmeds
Can wipe the floor w SoT Krang, but occasionally take the odd stupid hit (frustrating)
@ SuperShred, other than the very first move where it’s always tricky dodging whatever he decides to do first, I can pretty easily handle his first half
Once he bops to 2nd half I’m f*ckin done - the “four fire kage-bunshins” isn’t too bad, though it does nick me every so often (frustrating), what kills me is the super fast whipping around and the increased speed fire rings, they’re too fast to jump so I gotta adapt to dodging (which I’m super out of practice with)
I know I just need to get gud but man, sometimes I can get him down to 25-30% and it’s like DUDE so close

Pretty much sticking to 3-star STR units, with couple exceptions
Raph the abs best for chewing down HP bars quickly, best standing ultra for clearing foots @ krang - Splinter is good too but his slow speed draws him back a bit, and his standing ultra doesn’t reliably clear Krang foots
I like trying to use Karai, but I get touched during Krang battle more than I would like
Mondo the same, I love playing as him but I f*ck up too much and don’t make it to shred half the time
Mona I really like, she’s probably next best for me to get to shred reliably, a shame her jumping ultra is so weird and her standing does strange damage on smaller (humanoid) targets
Casey I used to main in these attempts, he’s really good but I find Raph gets the job done quicker

I would love to hear some hot tips for getting the Unharmed challenge VS Gnarly SuperShred, open to all input

I did some quickies with Raph and Mikey, but it can be done with anyone - it's just a matter of practice really, If you do it with three bars my only sugestion is to hold SAs, then nuke his second phase

I also have pretty neat no damage recorded in multi as Don and Leo tag done with good pal

You know this seems like it would be obvious but I haven’t been doing that, I’ve been blowing my supers immediately (a hold over from when I wasn’t great @ 1st half) - I’m absolutely going to do this now, thx

Also *watches raph vid* holy sh*t, I need to up my game

RadRat, u inspired me to use more dodging, as well as feeling free-er to use dodge-ultras during superShred’s vulnerability window, I finally cleared the unharmed on Gnarly tonight

Here’s my text copied from GameFAQs:

“OMGGGGG, FINALLY beat the final unharmed, just cleared WotL on Gnarly, ultimately with Casey (more on that in a sec)

died SO many times, re-fighting Krang and seeing both their stupid intro smash-cuts over & over & over again got really tedious, so I mixed in survival mode runs, and maxed out all characters in survival (all decos unlocked)

at first I was just using 3-star ATK units, but the insane repetitiveness got me eventually testing out weaker units I’d been shirking, seeing if DPS made up for the weaker hits

eventually cleared the arcade achievements in the meantime, this unharmed was finally the VERY LAST thing I had to achieve

Krang SoT becomes super easy just by fact of how often I gotta replay him trying for superShred, just get in that sweet spot between his fists to bypass the groundpound and you’re gold, just have to dodge the 3 eye lasers and whenever he shifts up/down for the two hander blasts just watch to see if he’s lining up his lower hand with the sweet spot and adjust accordingly to avoid
i find saving an ultra just to clear up any foots he summons is the quickest way to go; if you’re using Donnie or Mona you can reach him (charge heavy atks) even when he’s hiding furthest away after his big mouthblast

i used to think you needed to save all 3 gauges for SuperShred, but with millions of retries, I eventually got fairly good at foreseeing/dodging his seemingly random criss-cross dash attacks
also since his 2nd half is more dangerous than his 1st, can use 1 or 2 ultras during 1st half but if he’s close to 50% u may wanna save up to 3 again
jumping his spreading-area circle fires seems to be best for the 1st half; once he gets faster in 2nd half, I find it’s best to back against a wall and use the dodge, that way you’re still ready to jump (and not in the middle of one) when he launches off again
when he goes 2nd half “four kage-bunshins” it helps to be ready on one side, quickly dispatch the two there (jumpkicks) before he really starts firing, then move up & down to draw out his opposite side shots, depending on how they roll out you could run over & slide under one to hit the 3rd guy, or just walk over and forward-dodge through it, then just move left/right slowly to draw out the 4th guys shot and then finish em
be careful if you’re going for the slide on the 3rd guy, that you’re either all the way up or all the way down - if you initiate the slide near the shred-ball and you’re “too close” the slide will drift into him (like you’re attacking the ball) and boom ur done

best quick damage in one “shred out of breath” vulnerability window is three air ultras in quick sequence; you may have to “pull back” on them so you don’t push yourself too far past him, but you have enough time to fire/land all three
if you can get him to 2nd phase, successfully dodge the 4 fire guys once, and unload your 3 air ultras, he should be under 25% health by that point, just keep dodging & persevere!

Also it really is true, it doesn’t matter which character you use - I got close (under 25%) with Leo, Splinter, Usagi, Mona - if you practice enough to get better at dodging/avoiding, even Mikey starts playing well
The two characters I didn’t do as well with against the final bosses, were April (too little damage, not enough range, ultras don’t clear foots as efficiently), and sadly Mondo, whose very short range made Krang a pain, and his walljump often unexpectedly triggered when jumping shred’s flames, overcomplicating more than shoulda been

anyways, all done! I got the green checkmark, all stage challenges completed on Gnarly

does the switch version get the official “Who Needs A Dock” in the Achievements section? Like how Casey’s “play as him” achievement only appears once you’ve done it, but is “invisible” beforehand

but I also heard Who Needs A Dock might not be on the switch version, if the green checkmark is “it” - cause I’m sure I took a “knocked out of the air but no damage registered” couple of times
do i in fact have one more thing to unlock?”

Woo! About ten days later, lots of practice and I finally pulled off Who Needs A Dock achievement, on Gnarly story mode (didn’t want to reset all my green checkmarks, especially the four unharmed’s), using Mikey

Copied from GameFAQs:

“ Actually never mind, I pulled it off! WhoNeedsADock? achievement obtained, on NintendoSwitch version just now, using Mikey

(should preface this with, I tried to use the cheese method for the achievement, joining into others’ stage 16 when it’s almost completed? but maybe it’s just cause I’m playing on the switch, couple years after launch, but I didn’t see tons of people out there playing online - the vast majority of other online players were fresh, not-max-level players, whose story mode stages were literally being unlocked as we went, and always on chill/okay - only ever saw one person on gnarly (not a requirement, I know), and only ever saw one guy who could prob have pulled it off (a splinter player w 60K+ kills) - also I never saw anyone actually clear stage 16, just parties farting around the other stages, usually quit after clearing stage 15 Krang/shredder)

still alternating all characters, though I started to focus on 3-star speed characters, since the name of the game is dodging/avoiding superShred
the only new content I can really say, is I double-jump along the far sides to avoid his dashing and his teleporting lunges, and Mikey’s dodge-ultra, the bicycle kick? Does a good solid chunk of damage for (not an air-ultra), since he can’t pull SuperShred into the animation, it just dumps all the damage into one shot, very nice
got him to 2nd half, pretty good at the four kage-bunshins, bust 3 air ultras, down to approx 25% life
since he was grabbing me out of (ground-dodging the faster fire rings), decided to try double-jumping across the board from the fast fires instead, and managed to luck out on the 2nd go, avoided getting touched (dodged a 2nd set of kage-bunshins) and landed a final hit combo ending with a dodge-ultra, BOOM did it, Achievement Unlocked

so that’s it, all unharmed’s cleared on Gnarly, plus the no-hit SuperShred achievement, all done!”
