So for example; playing as Raph. You get a crystal, and it rewards you his Mirage skin to use. (Black & White from the 84 comics.)
Every individual character has stuff like this in Survival. I guess it depends if you think that's worth it or not.
Yes. I've only played a short bit of the survival mode so far, but I believe the crystals that reward you a level-up at the end of a run are meant to help you get further. I imagine it's possible to beat the story portion of survival in your first go, but I sure as hell won't be the one to pull that off.
I believe the 'story' ending is after you beat the fifth stage of Survival, but it DOES continue on after that and continue to ramp up difficulty. It adds in new types of enemies, mixes what comes in that wave, and will sometimes pair up random bosses to fight you. (Example: Slash and Metalhead, at the same time.)
When I finished my first run, I unlocked a palette swap skin and I also unlocked a second special move bar so I could store up to 2x at once. The level ups are permanent rewards that carry between runs.
I don't know if there's a hard limit to survival.
