Switch, Xbox and PC support 6 players local as long as you have enough controllers.

Since enabling that option, I have been successful in getting all my 4+ player games, to recognize all the controllers I connect to my PC, and I have tested different kinds of combinations, of different types of bluetooth and 2.4gz controllers and even wired ones in the mix.
It actually does. It even has a lighting scheme for the Xbox style controllers.
You might have a driver issue if you're having trouble using more than 4 controllers, or the game itself requires some extra permissions, but it's been a feature for a very long time.
Open steam > settings > controller > general controller settings >
Check the "Xbox extended feature support" box That should fix you right up. If that's still not doing it for you, give your drivers a full reinstall.
