Fan cabinet; irritating little UI issue. Possible bug?
In the fan cabinet, I already had the fan, already set up correctly and then had to move the beads appropriately. I looked at the fan, remembered the correct positions, and then looked back at the beads, (fan still in inventory).
Now, the first couple of beads moved fine; the others didn't. I tried for about 10 minutes, putting the fan on, taking it off, checking the positions, trying to re-adjust the beads. Sometimes a bead would move (not always the same one) and sometimes not, and I'd just get an increasingly bad 'bing-bong' and the hint which needed to be dismissed.
Rinse, repeat, get increasing frustrated and annoyed.
The top bead never was movable, though. So even though I eventually got 4 placed correctly, the last seemed to be totally broken.

Eventually, I worked it out. You need to put the fan in place, then move the blades out of the way so you can move the beads to the right position.

I think it would make a lot more sense if you could always move the beads. It wasn't at all clear that it wasn't just some bug with the top bead being stuck.

Actually you could always move all the beads, even without the fan mounted, but from a position at the *rear* of the fan mounting where you cannot see the bead/fan position pictures. I agree that this is quite unintuitive as well.

Really? I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't rotate the view far enough to be able to see the back of that mechanism at all.
If that is the intended solution, then it's utterly bonkers. :steamhappy:

It's actually a different position in the room rather than just looking around when in front of it, iirc. I never saw it as the intended solution though, just as a quirk of the game.

Sorry to hear you had some trouble!

As soon as the fan draw is pulled out of the Japanese cabinet, you can interact with and move the beads to any position you want.

To reveal what the correct position of the beads are, you must first place the fan at the bottom of the large pagoda. once the fan arms are position correctly, you can place the fan in the drawer and then align the beads with the holes on each fan arm.

No; I could not. The top bead was completely impossible to move until the fan was placed.

I knew what position to put the beads in. I had already set up the fan correctly, too.

The point is that if I hadn't put the fan into the holder in the drawer, I could interact with some of the beads, but not all of them.

To me it makes far more sense to put the beads in the correct position first, and then place the fan. Otherwise when you place the fan, the blades line up with the arms holding the beads so you can't see them and thus can't move them. You have to deliberately break the fan to the wrong configuration so you can position the beads, and then move the fan back.

This would all be fine, if it wasn't for the fact that you can move some, but not all of the beads without the fan in the holder. It make it feel like positioning the beads first is a viable solution, when in fact you can't do it like that because the top bead simply can't be moved unless the fan is in place.

You might want to take another look and rotate your view along the horizontal axis until you can see the reverse side. You should absolutely be able to freely move the beads whether or not the fan is present and you should be able to see all the beads.

Yes, this is how I did it - it didn't occur to me to move the beads from the front - can you even see them from that direction after you place the fan?
